We saw what happened in 2016 when they took their time. His support among the base only grew as voters were divided. Cruz thought he could sneak in last minute, but it was too late. Then we saw what happened in 2020 among the Democrats when they coalesced around Biden to beat Bernie. It worked. However, with Trump having 30-40% of the base locked up no matter what, I don't think they can wait very long. It needs to be two men going into Iowa. They need to kick Trump now before he can gain momentum. DeSantis is the only candidate who can coalesce the establishment, bring back some Never Trumpers, and pickoff some of Trump's base. I think he's learned from Trump on how to act tough as we've seen this playout with him versus the media. I think he's grown into a stronger candidate than Cruz, Bush, or Walker ever were. Trump has more charisma and probably 40% of the party will be with him until the end, but I think DeSantis could win up to 60%. They need to absolutely clear the field though. What's clear is that globalism does not sell well to the Republican voters. Old guard Republicans like Liz Cheney, Chris Christie, Mitt Romney, Larry Hogan, and others would have absolutely no shot against him. However, I could see that exact group unifying behind DeSantis in a bid to beat Trump. They all know DeSantis isn't all that MAGA and that he only kissed Trump's ass to further his political career as many of them have. Now, as everybody with a brain knows, Trump cares first and foremost about himself, not the party or country. There's a decent chance that if he loses the primary, he goes rogue, runs as an Independent, and the Democrat wins in a landslide. That or he encourages his base not to vote just out of spite and the low turnout wins it for the Democrat.
