Being immigrants my parents had low incomes. But being from india meant the kind of food was we ate low cost but tasty and fresh. India being dirt poor back then meant women were used to cooking low budget from scratch. Although chicken curry (and less often lamb) was only as a treat at the weekends. The rest of the week was vegetarian. This was before the era of cheap mass produced chicken. My dads cousin who immigrated 10 years before my parents, was more well off, he could afford to feed his family chicken every day . He also had fewer mouths to feed. Where i lacked was clothes, often had to wear many hand me downs from my older brother. And rarely having the latest toys
