The Florida Department of Educationon Friday said the state will not include dozens of math textbooks in a list used by school districts to buybooks for classrooms because their content included references to critical race theory and other “prohibited topics” and “unsolicited strategies.”

The announcement was madein a press release titled “Florida Rejects Publishers’ Attempts to Indoctrinate Students.” It did not include the names of any of the books or provide specific examples of the content that prompted their objections.

The state agency said that 54 of the 132 textbooks that publishers submitted for the state’s review were “impermissible with either Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics — the most in Florida’s history.” Most of the books that were not approved were for grades K-5, the statement said.

“Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics,” the press release said.

The decision comes as efforts to challenge books surge in local school board meetings across the nation. In Florida, Republican lawmakers approved a new law that offers more transparency in the book selection process, casting the issue as one about parental rights.

Why put anything other than math in a math textbook unless you are trying to pull off a stealthy indoctrination?

In regards to Math text books -- it is very important to understand the highlighted portion of the sentence below.

“Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics,” the press release said.

The Common Core standards created for mathematics have been a disaster for math education. These Common Core Math standards have created a generation of youth who cannot even figure out the correct change to give you in McDonald's. For years, there have been numerous articles and teachers outlining how Common Core standards for math have been a complete fiasco.

The math text books are not being eliminated because they include CRT or SEL in mathematics for the most part. The majority of the math text books are being flung aside in Florida and other states because the states are moving away from Common Core education for math -- and the text books are no longer applicable to the math education standards being used.

In Florida this change away from Common Core has been going on for a couple of years already. But this did not stop the DeSantis administration from releasing an announcement trying to couple the elimination of math text books to CRT and SEL -- all to foster his political agenda.

New York Times: “Using online sample materials provided by publishers to Florida school districts, The New York Times was able to review 21 of the rejected books and see what may have led the state to reject them. Because Florida has released so few details about its textbook review process, it is unknown whether these examples led to the rejections. But they do illustrate the way in which these concepts appear — and don’t appear — in curriculum materials.”

“In most of the books, there was little that touched on race, never mind an academic framework like critical race theory.”

The United States is a very proud country of "indoctrination"...something we learned very well from the British (England).

In fact, it's one of the most hypocritical tools we use in politics.

It laughable in context that Florida is unable to find anything objectionable in a majority of the math text books. And all they can provide is a small number of examples --- none of which are really CRT.

Two of the high school math text books were reviewed by a group of reporters and they found nothing on CRT, SEL or anything related to race in them.... just lots & lots of math equations.

DeSantis wouldn't think this would get him political traction unless pollsters were telling him that most voters agreed with him. The textbook publishers will need to please the customer or it will go elsewhere.
