This is not "news" per se because I can't link to anything. I am just giving a heads up that in my area, movie theaters are closing like crazy. Not only that, the ones left are raising prices! Madness! Figure out your own stock plays on this, but I think this is a trend.
I can't imagine why anyone would want to go to a movie theater these days. The whole concept is so antiquated. This is the age of endless media streaming right into your home or mobile device. And the best part is that I can have it all without some jackass crunching on popcorn or talking on his cellphone. Hollywood has wasted enough resources trying to prop up the theater business. It's time to start releasing everything in real-time across all distribution channels, not this nonsense where the theaters get the first releases and everybody else must wait for months.
AMC, Regal etc., are in trouble but theaters showing indie films are thriving eg Landmark, Sundance etc., however a lot of truth to Baron's comments How Indies Can Survive and Even Thrive in a Blockbuster World http://variety.com/2016/film/features/how-indies-can-survive-1201750485/
HUH, when I travel around the country, I enjoy going to small town Movie Theaters, always cheaper than big city, everything cheaper as well. But I go 2-3 times a month to the movies at home, like the rocking seats, leg room, always extra cool and wine bar, and lady friends like them better than being at home, they want to go out and something to eat after. heeheehee I get extra happy when I yell at top of my lungs when someone is talking on the cell till they remove the alien who don't know to do this. Ten years ago I bought the bucket that had lifetime 50 cent popcorn with my special bucket, hell I go into this theater days I don't go to the movies just for the popcorn. We still have some theaters where it is buck and half for movies been out couple months. Guess you guys that are married and have a bucket of kids watch at home?
Well done Baron....and I totally agree. I just got Amazon's Firestick....and I love it. Ok, ok...they don't have "original" content....YET...but once they do, it's "ALL OVER" for NetFlix.
I can't agree more. The idea of a place where you have to gather together in a crowd to attend some event dates back to times when the performers were few and they couldn't entertain everyone individually. Nowadays this concept is not only out-dated but even dangerous, considering increasing levels of terrorism and weak level of healthcare epidemy prevention in some states.
Unless you want to wait several months to see a movie, you have no choice but to go to a theater. And that is why movie theaters will still exist. And I'm sure the movie industry makes more money when people see movies at the theater. So I wouldn't expect the delayed release model to go away anytime soon.
I haven't seen any movie theaters close near me...there were about 2 that opened up in the last few years, aside from that the new theater that opened is charging high ticket prices....last time I went to the movies was February... I might see 1 movie a year in the theater and that is on the high end....anyway 2 tickets came out to nearly $30, I was like WTF! Some theaters now have special days where they discount tickets to low as $6 or $7 which is fair....aside from that these DC marvel movies are still grossing hundreds of millions of dollars after release which means someone is still going to the movies.
Theaters are closing because their product is crap. There's no mystery. How'd you like to be a theater owner these days, trying to draw business with what distributors are providing? Not a lot of fun in that.
