A poll released Tuesday found that a vast majority of Republicans say they would not be able to live off the minimum wage.

A survey conducted by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling on behalf of Americans United for Change and the Center for American Progress Action Fund found that 69 percent of Republican respondents said they don't think they could live off the minimum wage, versus 80 percent of Democrats and 75 percent of voters overall. However, when asked if they support raising the minimum wage, just 37 percent of Republicans said they would back an increase. (74 percent of Democrats said they are in support of a hike.) more . . .

All that survey shows is that there are more Democrats earning a minimum wage than Republicans. Not surprising and somewhat telling.

Pay should be commensurate with experience and education.

The idea is that a business generate profit rather than exist simply as a liberal portal for redistribution. Seattle is finding that out right now.

If you've become embittered that your full-time job at McDonalds isn't supplying you with the finer things in life then you should take advantage of the education system and pull yourself up like everyone else.

Most republicans realize that 95% of people making the minimum wage are not dependent upon it for living expenses. Many are teenagers who are on the first rung of the ladder to upward mobility. Republicans believe that billions of people via the free market know better what wages should be rather than some self appointed, arrogant, self righteous democrats who are so willing to use the power of big government to force their ideas on others.

It's important to let the (real) minimum wage fall still further, so that our entry level workers are even more eager to move up. Because history teaches us that this is what masses of people in rags do, they get "eager".

They don't get eager until they come off of government benefits. Remember the detailed story about the single mom who wouldn't take a job because she'd lose more $$ in welfare than she would make at the job?

That story sounds like a good reason to raise the minimum wage.

I'll bet those women in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory were eager.

    Or end/adjust government benefits.
