Billionaire George Soros warned of the "mortal danger" of China's use of artificial intelligence to repress its citizens under the leadership of Xi Jinping, who he called the most dangerous opponent of democracies.

“I want to call attention to the mortal danger facing open societies from the instruments of control that machine learning and artificial intelligence can put in the hands of repressive regimes,” the 88-year-old said on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"China is not the only authoritarian regime in the world but it's undoubtedly the wealthiest, strongest and most developed in machine learning and artificial intelligence."

"This makes Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of open societies," he said.

"The instruments of control developed by artificial intelligence give an inherent advantage of totalitarian regimes over open societies," he said.

The former hedge fund manager said China is developing a centralised database that will use algorithms to determine whether a person poses a threat to the one-party system.

While the so-called social credit system is not yet fully operational, "it will subordinate the fate of the individual to the interests of the one-party state in ways unprecedented in history," Soros said.
Gloomy outlook, few world leaders for Davos 2019

An array of crises will keep several world leaders away from the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, which takes place against a backdrop of deepening gloom over the global economic and political outlook.

At the Davos conference last year, Soros lashed out at social-media giants Facebook and Google. He compared them to gambling companies that foster addiction among users and said that they exploit the data they control. Soros today reiterated the need to regulate technology firms while authoritarian regimes declare theirs as "national champions."

"That's what has enabled some Chinese state-owned companies to catch up with and even surpass the multinational giants," he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, and China's President Xi Jinping were both in Soros's sights.

In his speech, Soros touched on subjects including his childhood, running a hedge fund and his efforts to protect human rights. He spoke at length about China, criticizing Xi and the nation's "One Belt, One Road" infrastructure project as self-serving. He also called out Russian President Vladimir Putin as another enemy of democracy.
"I've been concentrating on China but open societies have many more enemies, Putin's Russia foremost among them," Soros said.

Soros has become an lightning rod for his political views and philanthropic efforts. A longtime supporter and financial backer of progressive causes and Democratic politicians, he's become a target of right wing activists. In October, an apparent explosive device was discovered at his suburban New York home.

In 2011, Soros closed his hedge fund and converted his firm into a family office -- investing solely on behalf of himself, his family members and the Open Society Foundations, a worldwide network of philanthropies.

Georgey boy Soros, you are going to die soon, and you will not be able to take your billions with you. So long, and thanks for all the nothing fish. He knows not of what he speaks. That is what money does to you.

The bottom line here is...The venue does not promote any meme such as addiction, or the like. It is the people that do. If it is not inherent in the people, then it will not be fostered by the venue.

Do you always know of what you speak? Cause I've read plenty of your posts where you did not. Conversely, pretty much everything that I've read from George Soros was pretty well thought through, even if I did not always agree with it.

That's true about almost any addiction, drugs, alcohol etc. If you prone to addiction (which is genetic, at least tentatively), you will lean towards instant gratification whatever it is. Social networks found a near-perfect way to exploit the peoples need for instant gratification and that makes them pretty evil in my book.

Don't worry. Very soon all of the regimes in the world, democratic or non-democratic will be using artificial intelligence to evaluate somebody's "threat" to the government. Everybody criticizes China but all of the crap found in China eventually find their way into the West. It's just a matter of time.

Yep, like a frog heated up slowly in a pot of water, or, chip, chip, chipping away, gummints subtly, quietly keep chipping away freedoms. Here is further proof.... https://www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...e-global-marketing-firms-20190124-p50tcz.html
And then we have the public doing it too, Facebook, Google, introducing education, communication, information and entertainment with a hidden cost, your private data.

I'm pretty sure @Overnight is a paid poster by @Baron meant to drum up views. No offense @Baron I understand you got a business to run.

However the dude has clearly lost it, I've read some of his/her/it earlier stuff and it wasn't bad but the recent stuff is completely bizarre.
