    Stock Market Rally Trades Tightly
TheDow Jones today has been trading tightly for several weeks. In fact, the Dow industrials, S&P 500 index and Nasdaq composite all would qualify for three- or four-weeks tight patterns themselves. Not only has the recent shakeout helped top stocks carve handles, the stock market rally's tight weekly closes are encouraging tight patterns among recent breakouts.

After a stock breaks out and runs up for a time, sometimes it will refuse to give up much ground. If its weekly close is within 1%-1.5% of the prior week's close for two straight weeks, that's constitutes a three-weeks-tight. (It's three straight weeks in a four-weeks-tight variant.)

They often are hard to spot on a daily chart. Use weekly charts to spot three-weeks-tight patterns.Marketsmith highlights tight patterns with a little blue area on weekly charts.

Thebuy pointis 10 cents above the highest point in the three-weeks-tight, not necessarily the left-hand side of the pattern. A three-weeks tight is typically an opportunity for existing holders to add a few more shares. Aggressive investors can use them to start a position, especially if the tight action is not too far extended from the prior base. But the risks are higher.

    Microsoft Stock
Microsoft stock, AMD stock, Fortinet stock, Copart stock and Jabil stock all had a shakeout day on Tuesday, when China trade worries slammed the major averages. That's a positive for these tight patterns, given that they are too short to be true bases.

Microsoft stock, given its stair-stepper history over the past year, tends to form a lot of tight patterns. So generally investors shouldn't put too much weight on the Dow Jones stock's tight formations. However, this is Microsoft stock's first pause since its late October breakout, running up with its 10-day line most of the way. The buy point on Microsoft stock is 152.60.

Copart stock also tends to form a number of tight patterns. The entry point for Copart stock is 92.51.

With AMD stock, Fortinet stock and Jabil stock, the tight action is fairly easy to see on a daily chart, with the buy point at the left-hand side. If they continue to trade like this for a while longer, they could formflat bases.

AMD stock has a 41.89 entry. Fortinet stock has a 106.10 buy point. Jabil stock has a 39.83 entry, nearly reaching it on Friday.
