Every Republican for himself: McConnell told senators in closed door meeting to come up with their own Trump defense According to a report , Republican lawmakers, left without guidance by the White House on how to push back at the House impeachment hearings being conducted by the Democratic-led House, are being forced to come up with their own defense of embattled President Donald Trump. According to the report, “Republicans have no unified argument in the impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump, in large part because they can’t agree on how best to defend the president — or for some, if they should.” Noting, “it’s every Republican for himself or herself,” the report goes on to add, “The result is a mishmash of GOP commentary spilling from Capitol Hill that may shield lawmakers, for now, from risky political choices, but leaves them with a disjointed defense of Trump as impeachment hearings push into the public realm this coming week.” According to the report, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) recently convened a closed-door meeting, complete with a PowerPoint presentation, to explain how impeachment works, but left it to his GOP colleagues to fashion their own Trump defenses. “McConnell told Republican senators their best bet was to calibrate their own message about the impeachment inquiry to fit their political situation, according to two people familiar with the private meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door session,” HuffPost reports. “But when it came time to broach what Republicans should say about impeachment, McConnell showed a preference for saying as little about it as possible.” According to veteran GOP strategist Alex Conant, the lack of a unified message could prove to be disastrous for a party facing what is expected to be a contentious and high-turnout election in 2020. “It’s not good. Normally you want to establish the facts, get them out on their own terms, and build a message around that strategy. They’re not doing any of that,” Conant explained. “It’s hard to rally people to your side without a coherent and sustainable message.” Democratic strategist Jim Manley said Republicans should proceed at their own peril, warning, “Most of these folks have got to know that what the president’s doing is wrong, but they’ve made a cold-hearted, political decision right now it’s best to stick with the president.”
Here is John Kennedy's , GOP’s John Kennedy caves on defending extortion — but claims Trump didn’t have ‘culpable state of mind’ Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) on Sunday argued that President Donald Trump may not be guilty of a quid pro quo with Ukraine if he did not have a “culpable state of mind” when he allegedly tried to extort the country’s president. Kennedy made the remarks while speaking to CBS News host Margaret Brennan. “The quid pro quo, in my judgment, is a red herring,” Kennedy opined before agreeing that it would be “over the line” for Trump to ask Ukraine to conduct an investigation into Joe Biden. But the Louisiana senator suggested that the president may be in the clear if he did not have a guilty “state of mind” while extorting Ukraine. “I think this case is going to come down to the president’s intent, his motive, did he have a culpable state of mind?” Kennedy said. “So, ‘over the line,’ does that mean impeachable?” Brennan wondered. “Yeah, probably,” Kennedy agreed. “So there is something that could potentially persuade you to vote for removal?” the CBS host pressed. “I can’t answer that, Margaret,” Kennedy deflected. “Because that encompasses all possible scenarios. It is like asking me, if I didn’t go fishing on Saturday, how many fish would I have caught?”
Yeh, must look scary to you to see the Senate Majority Leader saying that republicans should stick together. ie. follow the dem model. No doubt you want to stop that in its tracks.
Lyle is now viruscore1 however he says he did not ask for that rename? These guys are so damaged on a good day however dropping to something unseen now. The Gingrich Revolution of '94 when Republicans went on and stayed on a unified national platform whether they believe in talking points or not is being put aside. It will certainly create more chaos but they they never did well on an everyone for himself strategy. Time for a burger
Virus's seemed to have been around for a while no (from join date)? Didn't care enough to keep him off ignore to see how bad his grammar was, or how infantile his insults were.
Lenningrad Lindsey says the Trump administration is too stoopid to engage in a quid pro quo, off course he keeps on changing his story. Lindsey Graham's latest defense of Trump is that his policy is too 'incoherent' to do a quid pro quo with Ukraine GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham on Wednesday suggested that President Donald Trump's policy toward Ukraine is so "incoherent" that he's "incapable" of engaging in a quid pro quo in his dealings with the country. "What I can tell you about the Trump policy toward Ukraine: It was incoherent. It depends on who you talk to; they seem to be incapable of forming a quid pro quo," Graham told reporters on Wednesday. Graham has shifted in his defense of the president several times as the impeachment inquiry has ramped up. In September, Graham said evidence of a quid pro quo involving the president and Ukraine did "not exist." After evidence emerged that a quid pro quo did occur in Trump's relations with Ukraine, Graham on Tuesday refused to look at it.
