Quite the circus in South Korea today.

South Korea president declares emergency martial law
    https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/03/asia/south-korea-martial-law-intl/index.html

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in an unannounced late-night TV address Tuesday, accusing the country’s main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and of anti-state activities.

Yoon did not say what specific measures would be taken. He cited a motion by the opposition Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament, to impeach top prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal.

Yoon labeled the opposition’s actions as “clear anti-state behavior aimed at inciting rebellion.” He further claimed these acts have “paralyzed state affairs and turned the National Assembly into a den of criminals.”

He describing martial law as a necessary measure to eradicate these “shameless pro-North anti-state forces.” He justified the decision as essential to protect the freedoms and safety of the people, ensure the country’s sustainability, and pass on a stable nation to future generations.

The parliament speaker is traveling to parliament and plans to convene a session, according to local broadcaster YTN TV. Yonhap news agency reported though that the entrance to parliament is blocked and lawmakers are unable to enter.

Yoon accused the opposition of turning the nation into a “drug haven” and creating a state of disorder detrimental to public safety and livelihood. He also said the Democratic Party was attempting to overthrow the liberal democratic system, declaring, “The National Assembly has become a monster undermining liberal democracy, and the nation is in a precarious state, teetering on the edge of collapse.”

He assured the public, “We will eliminate the anti-state forces and restore the country to normalcy as quickly as possible.” While acknowledging that martial law might cause some inconvenience, he promised efforts to minimize its impact on the public.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

You do realize that the South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is viewed as a Trump-style authoritarian and the opposition Democratic Party in Parliament is viewed as supporting democracy.

Looks like his own cabinet is not supporting Yoon in declaring martial law.

Yoon says he will lift emergency martial law, troops withdrawn

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said Wednesday that he will lift emergency martial law through a Cabinet meeting, hours after he declared the law, accusing the nation's opposition of paralyzing his government with "anti-state" activities.

In a televised address, Yoon made the remarks, saying that martial law troops have been withdrawn.

Following the declaration, the National Assembly passed a resolution calling for the lifting of martial law with the United States underscoring that any "political" disputes will be resolved "peacefully."

Source, almost like a trust me bro, but one comment on YT said that :

All parliament voted against this, 190/190 vote against so basically either president remove it or he'll be illegible.

So if it's true, the guy is either a lunatic or sellout.

President yoon called for martial law with little to no reason and attempted to shut down congress with military but for one reason or another soldier guariding the front gate of congress dispersed and 190 parliment members ended up voting to end martial law unanimously including Yoon's party members and it seems everything has been descalating since. To put into context from end of yoon's matial law speach and congress voting to stop it took 2 hours and 10 minutes approximately.

As a Korean, sharing some context: President Yoon, a former prosecutor general, leveraged his control over the prosecution in an attempt to politically eliminate the opposition party leader, who commands a two-thirds majority in Congress. However, his efforts failed, leaving him increasingly isolated. In a last-ditch attempt to retain power, he resorted to declaring martial law. This drastic measure also aimed to deflect attention from mounting corruption scandals involving himself, his family, and his inner circle. Allegations include the First Lady’s bribery (luxury handbags and etc), stock manipulation, land speculation, the suppression of investigations into drug smuggling and more.

Student Visas or work permits are usually the entry route for foreign operatives into the United States.

Yet, I've never understood how they've been able to obtain a FFL as foreign nationals (non-citizens).
