Interesting. What exactly does a "life belt" look like?

A life belt from Madoff's vessel was sold for $7,500 to Dave Goodboy, a hedge fund manager, who told the New York Times: "It's like having something off the Titanic."

Gawkers flock to buy Bernie Madoff trinkets at auction of Wall Street crook's seized treasures

It's too late for Bernard Madoff to grab a life preserver.

But for Dave Goodboy, a bidder at Saturday's auction of seized Madoff property, the floating ring from the Wall Street crook's yacht was on his to-buy list.

"It tells a story of excess," said Goodboy, 44, a hedge fund employee. "Everything this guy had isn't going to save him from being greedy. It's a lesson to stay legitimate."

The item was just one of hundreds formerly owned by Madoff and his wife Ruth, all up for auction inside the Sheraton New York hotel.

Proceeds from the sale will go to the Madoff victims duped out of $65 billion by the Ponzi scheme, the largest financial fraud in U.S. history.

"There is a $150 wallet I want," said Jose Gout, 39, a restaurant manager. "It'd be great to have this guy's wallet. It'd be a funny conversation piece."

The auction runs the gamut from high high-end jewelry to low-budget oddities.

A pair of diamond earrings was estimated to sell for $21,400, while a diamond and emerald bracelet was expected to bring $23,400.

A New York Mets jackets with "Madoff" stitched on the back was priced at $720, and a wood heron carving was expected to bring about $25.
