One of accounts under my management is on Reg T Margin and got a Margin Call and it has a Box spread financing with unutilized cash. Does anyone know how long IBKR give time for such margin call notice before starting to liquidate some positions?
Congratulations. I've been with IB for many years and never had any time to square away margin deficits. In my case, IB corrects my "margin deficit" around .6 seconds after sending that email.
Thank you. This mail was sent last Friday's US market closing and the negative SMA has still been outstanding since. I assume it will start liquidating the minute market opens in which the account has securities in.
You probably already know this, but you can go into TWS and mark positions that you want to liquidate last. That way if they start liquidating for you, at least you have some preference.
Indeed. yes, thank you. I am sending funds by wire so it should save the positions from being liquidated.
AFAIK, box spread financing only works with a Portfolio Management a/c. I am not sure how you are / have been benefiting from a box spread financing. Edit: Your post history seems to indicate you are outside US, perhaps EU? I have heard all EU a/c is PM (I do not know this for a fact however)? If so, where does Reg-T come in?
Reg T is a proxy for risk based financing. A box spread does nothing to reduce that. if you special memorandum account is negative then likely you are being called because your equity value is too low or they have raised the margin on some products that you own.
Hmmn IB actually gave you a weekend to put funds in. With me, it was immediate. LOL By 4:00 PM closing, IB started liquidating my positions. So with my experience, I think IB would start the liquidation first thing in the morning on Monday.
Yes indeed a wire transfer can be done to save liquidation. Today I asked my client to wire funds and he wired just enough funds to cover the margin deficit. And the fund was received before the market opens in Europe where his account has European stocks and nothing is liquidated. Though I have to send a web ticket to IBKR questioning why IBKR still has not updated the margin call despite that the funds is received and being on hold. And here is a snapshot of the account before and after I sent the web ticket. So I guess manual intervention is needed else the Liquidation robot is starting to do its actions. Before sending web ticket. After
The account is on Reg T as the NLV is less than USD110k. It benefited from a much lower interest rate. I am located in Asia and I have all my clients' accounts opened with IBKR LLC in US
