Why should these be made in China? Buick Envision SUVs are lined up at Yantai Port in China last December before being loaded on a freighter for the journey to the U.S. US denies GM request for tariff relief for Chinese-made Buick SUV Published Tue, Jun 4 2019 6:47 PM EDT Key Points The Trump administration has denied a General Motors Co request for an exemption to a 25% U.S. tariff on its Chinese-made Buick Envision sport utility vehicle. The denial of the nearly year-old petition came in a May 29 letter from the U.S. Trade Representative's office saying the request concerns "a product strategically important or related to 'Made in China 2025' or other Chinese industrial programs." The midsize SUV, priced starting at about $35,000, has become a target for critics of Chinese-made goods, including leaders of the United Auto Workers union and members in key political swing states such as Michigan and Ohio.
Sure, manufacture for a domestic market, export the left overs to old people in Florida. Unless you mean the tariffs, no, doesn't make sense.
GM is learning that it is not a good idea to cross Trump. You want to sell cars in the US, you make them here. Just like every other country in the world insists you do. Hey Germany, you're next.
So you think the government should control how and where companies produce their products? How is it Honda and Toyota can make good cars in the U.S. that are competitive and U.S. automakers have to go to Mexico and Canada and China? I realize China industry has huge government support so GOP has to decide if they want to stop claiming free trade and being hypocritical or realize we should stop supporting failing industries. This is the problem the GOP is falling into. They want free trade but when it does not suit their interests they want managed trade and subsidies and corporate welfare. Let GM make thier cars in China and Honda make their cars here. Why should I pay $40,000 for a U.S. made Buick when a $30,000 made Honda is better. U.S. is a consumer society and all we care about is good products at cheaper prices. GM was a failing company but the Bush administration stepped in and saved them so they can continue to fail. Rather than put conditions to make them improve, we said here is $17 billion, keep doing the same shit.
No one is telling companies where to make their products, although you would think a company that was bailed out by the Obama administration would at least make an effort to employ Americans. if GM wants to be a Chinese company, that's ok but then they will have to pay tariffs. Seems fair to me. The Japanese transplants, as well as BMW, built new factories largely in southern states where the local governments are not hostile to business and where the employees did not want unions screwing up their jobs.
Maybe you need to go back and google better: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/12/19/bush-bails-out-us-automakers-dec-19-2008-1066932 Wow you want to blame Obama for anything even if Bush did it haha.
