Coming back from a massive 20 point deficit in popularity in December, Mark Carney and his Liberals win the Canadian election. Oh I know, that title will upset some Trumpers on here and their fear of "liberals". We elected a business man with two central banking stints who has promised to attack Trump head on in the trade war. And this is what we want. Even better, Freeland won her riding easily, and the Conservative leader that some Americans on here seem to like didn't even win his riding. Anyone in Canada that got too closely aligned with Trump in recent months it was political suicide. Appeasing the man is simply unacceptable. Alberta maybe a mild exception but Trump's tariffs on Oil certainly aren't making him any fans there either.
I voted for Pierre Poilievre. Yet, in the recent weeks going into last night's election...I believe Carney message of unity and against Trump's agenda in America along with Carney attacking Trump's psychotic rhetoric about making Canada the 51st state to steal its culture and resources resonated stronger with Carney than Poilievre. It united Canada. Thus, Carney or Poilievre could have claim "unity" in their victory speech. On my street here in Quebec, Canada we had an election party last night although it's now moved to another neighbors house who doesn't have any kids. Conservatives, Liberals and other political party supporters...hanging out together on election night last night...without the anger. I still have not sleep and "everybody" having a good time as one...none of that bullshit that's here at ET after an election win when ET MAGA supporters were angry after their election victory in November 2024 instead of united as one country (without the division). Now guess who was the first to call Carney to congratulate him on his victory? Justin Trudeau although I believe Trudeau would have made the phone call had Poilievre won to send a message to the United States. It's a shame that the United States can not lead the world by example of unity. Also, I was not shocked that the Bloc Québécois watched its fortunes slip as the Liberals made gains in Quebec. The sovereigntist party projected to lose about one-third of the seats it held prior to the election. The neighborhood party I mentioned above was held at a neighbor's house who is a separatist but wanted everybody to know there's a common enemy...Trump. ------- An Unthinkable Turnaround for the Liberals and Carney What an extraordinary moment in Canadian political history. The Liberal party, which only months ago was trailing in the polls by double digits, led by prime minister - a former banker who until months ago had no political experience - winning a fourth term in office. It's an unthinkable turnaround and it's a measure of this moment - an election where Donald Trump, a person whose name wasn't on the ballot, transformed Canada's political landscape. Not just the tariffs he's imposed, but also the continuing threat to turn Canada into the 51st state has galvanised Canadians. He's caused some to change their usual voting loyalties in order to put in charge a 60-year-old economist who they believe is the man to solve what Mark Carney dubbed the "crisis of their lifetime". In his victory speech, while he thanked his supporters, he also mentioned he would be the prime minister for all Canadians - recognizing that there were millions who didn't vote him. ------- Mark Carney's Liberal Party wins the Canadian election, in a remarkable turnaround for the centre-left party - watch how the night unfolded in under two minutes In his victory speech, Carney tells supporters: "President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us - that will never ever happen" It remains too close to call whether he will secure a majority in parliament - if not, he'll have to rely on other parties to govern. Defeated Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre - until recently expected to become the next PM - is projected to lose his seat The Liberal Party were well behind in the polls just three months ago, before Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as leader and US President Trump upended relations and became the defining issue of the campaign An Unthinkable Turnaround for the Liberals and Carney @ https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cr5d13e4r2rt Why the Liberals won - and Conservatives lost @ https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g2y7969gyo The United States united in name only - Mark Carney wrbtrader
If Poilievre was a convicted felon 34x, guilty as a rapist in a civil case, and holds the record for lying more than any other Canadian running for Prime Minister in the history of Canadian politics... He would have won (sarcasm). Yet, I do like the facts that Carney embraces population diversity and the cultural heritage of its citizens to separate itself from America. wrbtrader
Trump’s Canadian PM Pick Hammered So Hard He Loses His Seat in Parliament https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump...-so-hard-he-loses-his-own-seat-in-parliament/
I thought for sure that Quebec would pick up more seats because it is the most anti-trump province in Canada. In contrast, Quebec lost a 1/3 of its seats to Liberals. Also, not surprising was the performance of the NDP and Green Party who tried too hard to stay out of the Trump tariff issues. It cost them dearly and the resignation of the NDP party leader. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/jagmeet-singh-ndp-election-results-1.7520955 He was outspoken against Trump but just nowhere like the other party leaders. Simply, the NDP and Green party failed to capitalize on the anti-trump sentiment and Canada's unity in comparison to Canada's other political parties. In contrast, Conservatives initially were outspoken against Trump but failed to maintain that momentum...more quiet in the month before Monday's night election. Liberals were the only ones that maintained the anti-trump sentiment from start to finish along with talking more about economic weapons to use against the Trump administration polices towards Canada. wrbtrader
