NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos, the first person charged in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, said on Tuesday his lawyers have applied for a pardon and that he may withdraw his guilty plea.

"My lawyers have applied for a pardon from the president for me," Papadopoulos said in an interview with Reuters, adding that the request was made a few days ago. "If I'm offered one I would love to accept it, of course."

Papadopoulos, who was plucked out of obscurity to work as a foreign policy adviser for Donald Trump's presidential run, pleaded guilty in October 2017 to lying to the FBI about his communications with two Russian nationals and a Maltese professor with Russian ties while working on the campaign.

Convicted felon George Papadopoulos said that he was treated well while serving his prison sentence because it was “Trump country.”

Papadopoulos, a former Donald Trump advisor, served eleven days in prison for lying to FBI agents about his contacts with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign.
He was interviewed by MSNBC chief legal correspondent Ari Melber on Tuesday. It was his first appearance on the network.

“What was it like for you in prison?” Melber asked. “How were you treated by the other inmates?
“It was Trump country, okay,” Papadopoulos replied. “Oxford, Wisconsin, is Trump country, a population of around 800 people.”

“Quite frankly, I was treated excellent,” he added.
“You’re saying the other inmates were Trump supporters and viewed you through that lens?” Melber asked.
“Let’s say I had some street cred,” Papadopoulos answered, with a laugh.
