We have friends who live in the North Carolina mountains who just made it to Raleigh and have been through a number hurricanes ourselves (Fran, etc.) in the Raleigh/Durham area. These storms will typically leave you without cell service, internet, land-line phone service, cable, power, gas and water. Many times for weeks.

The points below were written up with hurricanes and flooding in mind. However many of them may apply to other natural disasters such as blizzards, forest fires, and earthquakes.

Here are some thoughts on being prepared for these type of storms. I will urge others to add any additional points they think of.
    1. When the Internet and phones are out, Cash is King. Credit cards will be worthless. Have plenty of cash on hand.
    2. Never let your vehicle gas tank go below one half full on a regular basis. Better yet, completely fill all of your vehicle gas tanks before the storm hits.
    3. Get your vehicles to higher ground if you have any history of minor flooding in its current location. Try to place it in a location where large trees will not fall on it.
    4. Have a manual can opener.
    5. Keep 10 gallons of water stored in your house.
    6. Have lots of flash lights and the correct sized batteries. Even better to have LED flashlights that work with a hand-crank for winding them up.
    7. Keep a siphon to remove gas from one car to the other.
    8. Have USB chargers big enough in capacity that can charge your cell phone(s) several times. Even better is having a small solar panel which hooks into a charging device.
    9. Keep empty gas cans in your garage.
    10. Keep a good supply of your medicines at all times.
    11. Have an emergency medical kits with band-aids, etc.
    12. Store shelf stable food items always. Lots.
    13. Fill your bathtubs with water before the storm. This is not drinking water, it is for washing and flushing toilets.
    14. Know how to open your garage door when the power is out.
    15. If you have an outdoor grill which uses propane - then fill the propane tanks before the storm. Put the grill inside a garage, shed or some type of shelter during the storm. Grills powered by natural gas used by your home may be worthless after the storm; usually gas-lines to your house will be ripped up by trees falling over etc.
    16. Have an emergency radio which runs on batteries. It was your only source of communication.
    17. Have maps in your car and plan your escape route before the storm. Know alternative routes because your primary one may be blocked. (You may possibly have no GPS for quite some time especially if using a phone for maps).
    18. Know which neighbor(s) in the community has a chain saw (if you don't) and maybe a small generator connected to a fridge if you have medication which needs to be refrigerated.
    19. If you have a small generator -- be sure to keep it maintained. If you expect it to start after doing nothing with it for four years then you will be sadly disappointed.
    20. Have baby wipes with you because you lack water and toilet paper can no longer be flushed once stored water from tubs is out.
    21. After the storm only drive in daylight so you can see where the roads have been washed out and how flooded they are.

Folks who have additional points are welcome to add them to this thread.

or you can move to your friends/relatives place for a week or two.

if just a couple, my wife and i moved into a hotel when the power was out during the snowstorm many years ago.

there is nothing you can do until the weather is back to normal.

Run from a flash flood, check the weather like you're a captain at sea.
Let Elon bring Starlink to rural areas.

prepare for the possibility that help might not arrive for weeks. Have at least two weeks' worth of food, water, medicines, and other essentials. Be ready for limited communication and possible isolation.
