Poor Tom, so out of touch with the new left, which is to say the radical left. He had the gall to say: "Hispanic immigrants need to do a better job of assimilating to the United States and teaching their children to speak English." https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...ng-hispanics-should-work-harder-assimilation/ Old white guys are so yesterday for leftists
When my in-laws came to this country -- they were told to speak only English with their children, and that their children can only speak English in school. This paved to way for the children to assimilate and be successful in America.
In northern virginia there are large Hispanic populations and from my personal experience which may be anecdotal but seems somewhat true is that the kids do speak English because they are schooled in English. It was the parents that were far behind in learning the language because they often only worked in environments where they could stick with Spanish. In fact some of the kids were not that good at Spanish as they only understood when their parents spoke but could not speak or write it. I think this trend is growing that the children of many Hispanic immigrants over the past 15 years are assimilating at an increasing rate and becoming more gringo. The children are often better educated than the parents. Give it one generation...
I think this isn't limited to Hispanics. Asians and other cultures as well have this problem. I worked with a Chinese guy who used to tell stories at lunch about how his older brother couldn't understand his own father anymore. He had forgotten the Mandarin from his childhood and his father never learned English.
Yeah I agree. I think the first wave of people that arrive go immediately to communities of the same people and live and work in their own language but push their kids to assimilate (the whole reason they came here). That is why I don't think Tom's statement was offensive (as far left pussies jumped all over), it is just not really accurate picture of the assimilation process.
I happened to catch this yesterday and thought, old Tom just stepped in it. He was part of the lefty round table and they were all trying to appear moderate on the subject. Tom went a bridge too far and you could sense the immediate chill. I absolutely agree that the children learn the language much more so than the parents, but they also are the ones who become much more radicalized. Mom and dad are just happy to be out of the third world hellhole they came from.
That was the case sometimes but not always. My grandparents on my father's side came here fleeing the Russian revolution. I can tell you i never heard my grandfather speak a word of english. I think it was more pride than anything else. He didn't want to be embarrassed. My grandmother spoke some english but very broken. They lived in their own little communities just like Hispanics do now. The difference is, as i mentioned above, the kids are the ones becoming the radicals these days. That was not the case with previous generations, including Hispanics. Everyone was generally happy to be here. The silly little shits today, who deal with much less adversity, have much more opportunity, live a whole lot more comfortably, they are the ones bitching and moaning. It's nonsense.
Well not sure I agree on the radicalized part. Again this is only from my sphere in this area, the most radical either left or right are still not the latin children of immigrants. I mean in the Dem party it is pretty much the older white generation making the case for immigrants while actual immigrants that are here tend to simply work through local community groups if they wish to help or give support. National organizations like La Raza of course pull in the outliers. I often found the parents sacrificed so much to get here that most of their kids are pressured to do well in school and not fuck up. I see the parents struggling with the language and they demand their kids know English to not have the same problem or let that be an excuse why they did not succeed. Also often the family structure is in place with extended family. I think Tom was painting too broad a brush. All immigrants struggle at first to assimilate because they gravitate towards their communities, learn English almost at gunpoint and rely on each other. They also have deep roots to their home so they are stubborn that they need to hold on to traditions. The kids grow up in American schools playing video games and sports and mingling with other backgrounds and assimilate because it is more fun for them and makes life easier. I am referring to mostly legal immigrants just because they are more open with their interactions since they have no fear of getting "caught". The kids I have met where the parent's status might be questionable, I still find they are pressured to do well, attract only good attention and not make waves by acting like a shit.
Brokaw is clearly an out of touch fossil with disturbing racist tendencies. He probably thinks it is ok to guard the border as well. Nazi. It is the duty of legacy Americans to adapt to our new overlords, not the other way around. As a bonus, we get to pay for the process as well. In exchange for getting cheap lawn maintenance, your kids will get to live in Venezuela.
