The dollar was lower against the yen. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index shed 214.95 points, or 1.34 percent, to 15,876.78 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Monday. The index fell 72.14 points, or 0.45 percent, to close Friday at 16,091.73 points.
