Russia has prepared for years to deal with potential sanctions, especially in the wake of the international sanctions in 2014 after its actions in Crimea, by both promoting its own indigenous semiconductor production and also stockpiling chips for just such an occurrence.

However, Russia's domestically-designed chips from companies like Baikal, MCST, Yadro, and STC Module are actually manufactured by Taiwan-based TSMC, which has agreed to also suspend sales to the country to comply with the new export restrictions. That means Russia's supply of homegrown chips is also cut off.

Yes, it's a matter of short time before China floods the market with their chips.

This global, highly-interconnected world is suddenly being exposed. Regardless of what you think about Russia, it's frightening to think it could happen to some other nation simply for political reasons, or happen on a smaller scale as we've seen already to individuals or companies (bank accounts and business software being shut down, etc.).

Not if ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research, and all other semiconductor companies outside China stop supplying them with tooling and materials. Then shortly after that, talent starts leaving. There's a reason that horrible countries like North Korea have to shoot people trying to escape. If they just let people leave, no one would stay.

  6. Ok, so the cliff-notes to every elitetrader here is to:

    • Short Taiwan
    • Long China
Two weeks from now we'll read up about that in The Motley Fool's buy-alerts. :D

What an awkward assessment of the consequences of the Ukraine- Russia war.

"This global, highly-interconnected world is suddenly being exposed"... like peekaboo?

"simply for political reasons.." I know, right. We should just let politicians fight their differences MMA style. Imagine the incredible cost savings getting rid of militaries around the globe! Jeeeez, why didn't someone think of this sooner?!?

Nice troll job! It takes a lot of thought to write something so incredibly asinine. Even with some of the riff raff on here, no one could seriously pen something so brainless...right?
