Hello, I tried to short GME , and AMC but i would get Insufficient shares to short message on IB. It was for 100 shares of GME I don't short often so this is the first time I saw a message like that. Is this related to an exchange or to the specific broker. If I see it with IB would people who use other broker see the same message? Thank you .
Depends on the broker. Essentially the broker is borrowing shares from another trader who happens to be long, loans them to you, and collects a borrow fee. They can also borrow shares from other brokers, but in that case, your broker has to pay a fee. I use IB and was able to short GME in the aftermarket yesterday.
I tried to short it just now,,still can not well, too late, it looks like opportunity is gone for now, But I would be interested to know if other brokers had shares to short.
Look to see if they've changed the margin requirements again on shorts for those two instruments. I believe GME is still 300% unless it's changed.
Basically it is hard to borrow at your broker. Just check what is the short locate fee on that stock, pay that and you will be able to short it then
that is very tiny. GME can do much better than that. aim for 2x profit. as mentioned, the bulls are still controlling GME.
