Incoming House Democrats want to abolish prisons

Rep.-elect Summer Lee, D-Pa., a progressive Democrat, is taking over the district of longtime Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle in Washington.

Lee is a Democratic socialist backed by Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., whose political path is mirroring that of far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

She has openly endorsed several socialist policies — including the redistribution of wealth — as well as controversial progressive policies like abolishing prisons.

"Instead of 'thanking' Black women, Black voters, and especially, Black organizers... give us the investments we need and deserve, redistribute wealth, ends police violence, abolish the carceral state, commit to building Black directed political power... and reparations," Lee tweeted in November 2020.

"abolish the carceral state" does not mean abolish prisons. "Abolish the military industrial complex" does not mean get rid of the military. "Abolish corporate welfare" does not mean get rid of all subsidies, etc...

    What does it mean, then?

wild guess, reduce the police state in America, dismantle the bail system as it goes against due process & our right to a speedy trial, dismantle for-profit prison system which lobbies for criminalization bills and sentencing, reform drug offense and 3 strike penalties. Focus on rehabilitation vs incarceration, attempt to reduce institutionalization in lieu of reintegration.

Your wild guess is just a wild guess. There are a number of extreme positions listed in the quoted sentence, it's not out of the question that she means to abolish prisons altogether.

  8. Honestly, we need to change the "justice" system. The word justice in our justice system is almost synonymous with revenge in my mind. This should not be the case. There should be two purposes of prisons:
    1. To deter crimes from being committed in the first place
    2. To reform criminals who are capable of becoming law abiding citizens

These should be the two and only two reasons to hold people in prison. It's obvious that there are way too many career criminals going in and out of jail, often times the last act involving murder. Therefore, it's fair to say that neither of these two objectives are being met with those people. In my opinion, there should only be minimum sentencing, from there inmates should have to show they're capable of going back out into society. On the other side we need to help them get back into the work force otherwise crime will be the only decent paying "work" they can find.

  10. It means you're ham-fisted and don't place much value on comprehension.
