If you're a chart guy (as I am and recommend)... suggest a paid membership to Stockcharts.com

  1. If you use Stockcharts.com extensively, you should consider a paid membership.

I've used Stockcharts (free) over the years. Recently they've upped their "ads" for the free version. (Of course they have.. they want to persuade you to become a paid member like every other vendor... DUH!)

If you check out only a few charts, the free version is OK if you can put up with the ads. But if you use Stockcharts extensively (as I have in the past), the ads have become a big problem. It got so that their ads would slow data download waaay down and swamp my RAM.. like 95% RAM usage! I called them and asked about it.. they said... "if you want to use Stockcharts for free, you'll have to put up with the ads" Well, in my case the ads made use of the site not only unacceptable, but unusable.

So.. if you've followed my posts over the years, you know that I advocate Price TA.. and the charts are EVERYTHING!!!

Stockcharts offers a free month for you to try it out. I tried the paid version (no ads).. it's a world of difference in how it works. An example... you build "chart lists"... (waaaay easier in the paid version than the free)... and you want to change a variable.. you change it on one chart, then click "save changes to all charts on this list"... and they all change. So let's say you're looking at 6-mo charts... but then you want to look at 1 or 2 year charts. ALL of the charts in the list are changed if you want... then change them back if you want. That's waaaaay better and easier than using the free version.

Stockcharts is not paying me (you know I don't ask anybody for anything)... just saying if charts are vital to your trading, (if they're not, they should be) the paid version is very user friendly and waaaaay better than the free version. Well worth the $30/mo.

    FWIW...

    p0box4 and MarkBrown like this.
  4. I've run across Tradingview, but have never "looked under the covers".

Over the years I've had extensive experience with a few market charting software programs...

Meta Stock... multi winner of Stocks And Commodities magazine as "best in class".

    ESignal

    Ensign

    Sierra Charts*

    Investors Fast Track*

    Stockcharts.com*

All are good. Suggest trying and see what rings your bell, if any.

I'm a long term user of stockcharts.
They keep improving with out raising subscription price too much.
Particularly like their scan engine and alert features.

  6. I haven't looked into using alerts yet, but that would be helpful.

Easy to set from the chart.
Email, text and/or displayed on chart program.

I've used them more than 20 years ago when I traded stocks. But the major gripe at that time was they only offered EOD data. Are they giving real-time data now?

Realtime is available for an extra cost,

That's a bummer. I'm pretty sure you can run the scanner in real-time (as in, real-time alert while you're monitoring the chart) on the TOS platform for free.
