IBKR has made it very difficult for anyone with balance above USD110,000.- to get Portfolio Margin, despite that option trading has been approved
You did not state the minimum balance requirement. Perhaps USD$110,000 is too low. So try having a balance of USD1,000,000. Then see if it is still difficult to get the Portfolio Margin account. If still cannot, you have to change the broker.
It is stated that the minimum balance requirement is USD110,000.- And this particular client of mine has a balance close to USD3million. As an advisor with 20 or so clients under management, I find that IBKR is getting more complicated nowadays. It takes so much of my time trying to figure out all the permissions requirements and settings that keep ever changing. My goal is just NOT to use margin loan from IBKR which is so expensive and I try to get the loans from the market and I think IBKR has cleverly made it difficult for new accounts to accomplish this task. By making the permissions difficult and using their own secret algorithm, IBKR has effectively milking clients by charging high margin rates.
I know the post was about Portfolio Margin, but would you mind explaining what you mean with that and how you get those loans/credit from the market? Thanks!
Maybe it might be some restrictions on margin trading in your client's jurisdiction? You can try to summon the IBKR rep if you want to.
