I tried putting an exxon pre-open order but a stop limit order would not work. I had to do a limit order. I checked the box next to DAY (allow pre-open) but still nothing.

    Any suggestions?

    I'm using workstation, not web-based

Do you mean your order was active during pre-market trading (i.e., before 9:30am EST)? I think IB prohibits any market orders (including stops without limits) during pre and post-market trading because of liquidity concerns.

yeah, just realized that stop orders are market orders so I won't be able to do a stop-limit outside regular hours I guess.

I think you can do stop-limit orders outside regular hours. There just has to be a limit associated with the stop. You can't just have a regular stop (that converts into a market order) for pre and post-market.

I always have a limit w/my stop. I do a stop limit, not a stop and then a limit. But the stop limit does not execute outside regular hours for me

Okay, well maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. However, when I set up a STP order and then go into modify the order ticket, the "Allow this order to be triggered or filled outside of regular trading hours" checkbox is disabled. If I change the order type to a STP LMT, those two checkboxes become enabled. Try clicking on those checkboxes for your STP LMT orders and see if that works.

Here is a link to show how you can enable afterhours trading:
