These outages are on the server side so they affect both TWS and Gateway. IB controller is just a wrapper for TWS or Gateway, whichever you're using, its not a separate product. I haven't used it myself because I have this security authentication card that precludes it. My experience of TWS is that it isn't stable enough to run for 10 minutes, never mind long enough to run into a daily server outage. This might because I run everything on cheap linux boxes. I run Gateway which is ultra stable. I probably restart my Gateway less than half a dozen times a year, and that's almost never because its crashed (typical reason might be my power trips at home, or at the weekend I decided to move my internet wifi router to improve reception, which also meant moving my headless trading server and network backup). My system runs through these server outages. Its just a question of coding defensively - if the code doesn't get any response from the Gateway, then it waits but doesn't do anything stupid like trying to submit a blind order.
very true about IB gateway. have been running and is really stable and I can still use TWS in my 2nd PC. i couldn't think before that I can run TWS in another PC
Gateway is a truly tremendous product but you should reset it roughly weekly if you trade a lot due to a weird technical issue where it can stop receiving trade confirmations. As for using TWS in a second PC, this is not possible without a second child account which must pay (again) for any market data fees. Many people wishing the reliability of the Gateway and some semblance of a trading station for visualization while their ATS trades via the API end up using a tool called "TWSStart" and using the free NinjaTrader on top.
I keep TWS up all the time in a VM on my Mac on and a windows box when I'm using that (non-VM). The server resets occur for me almost always been 2100-2200PT or 0000-0100ET which is definitely in line with what they say. Personally I think unless they're doing upgrades there is no need for these resets unless some suboptimal server side code requires it.
TWS requires daily resets and this is an even bigger problem for an ATS than the slower speed of trades routed thru TWS compared with IBG.
how can you keep TWS up all the time ? unless you manually reset the lockout time twice a day (this drives me nuts or using IB controller. I use IB gateway now and life much easy with it
yes, without seeing my trades with stops/targets in TWS, it is a pain when you run IB gatway, so I use TWS using the 2nd acct
