how to separate trades into different strategies?

Discussion in 'Interactive Brokers' started by waynetrader, Apr 25, 2019.

  1. Hi All,

Does anyone know if there is a way to separate trades into different strategies, so that I can calculate the PnL and generate report for each strategy? I have Friends and family account with IB and I did search previous posts, which suggests opening a proprietary trading account. Since those post are several years old, I am wondering if things have changed and we can manage strategies within regular individual or F account.

Very appreciate if anyone can give some insights on this.

  2. You can generate two excel spreadsheets from your platform, and delete the trades that used the opposite strategies on each respective spreadsheet. Then upload each spreadsheet to separate TraderVue accounts.

  3. Have one account per strategy, use one for market data the others just for orders. Alternatively, you can label each trade through the API.

  4. To be clear I'm talking about abusing the order ref field. You could potentially use this to reference a local database or just include the strategy name in that string. I haven't used it as such but according to the documentation, it should be doable.

Equities or Futures? Does the trading account have to be at IB?

As well, any QuoteMonitor pages (and their trade-related labels) can be set up to be strategy specific. And can be changed with a mouse-click or two.

I do it manually in excel with a sql database. Every trade is allocated to a strategy. Then I calculate on a realtime, mtm, and realized basis how those strategies are doing. The broker sees my book as a bunch of positions - but I see it as a handful of strategies.

  8. Yea, the best thing is to keep your journal on a spreadsheet. I also do it manually because each trade has its strategy and there is no way to auto input them on Excel.

Yes, i use a notebook+ ink; works well for me.:cool: I have also paid someone to help with numbers , but not lately.

  10. it seems everyone do it manually, either in a spreadsheet or enter into a database. It would be nice if IB allows user to put labels on each trade.
