Hello, I would like to find stocks that have better historical performance then sp500 over certain period but are now down compered to sp500. Input: Find stock that overperformed sp500 by at least 30% during last 5y , market cap over 10B and over the past 3 month is underperforming sp500 by at least 10% Is there a stock screener that can do this? thank you
You can use a Relative Strength indicator to find these stocks: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/relativestrength.asp Then when you have the list you can use any other filter you like.
Are you looking to invest? If so, you’re looking in the wrong place. Historical price performance won’t help you much when you’re trying to find an elusive 10 bagger to hold onto. Look in places that aren’t well covered by industry analysts. These stocks tend to have quite a bit of upside relative to the margin of safety. The trick is, this section is also loaded with absolute trash. You’ll be spending a lot of time getting comfortable with 10-Ks. But if you look hard enough you can find opportunity.
You wanted stocks that beat the S&P by 30% over the last 5 years. The S&P is up 110% +/- in that time frame. So I plugged in.... "up more than 140% over 5 years".... "marketcap > 10B".... and "-10% for the last 3 months". Pretty easy. You can do it on Fintech. I think the variable that might have slowed you down, or stumped you, was the S&P factor. I just did that part manually. I went back to June 2016 and came up with the 110% (eyeballed); so I entered "increased by 140% or greater since 6/16". Whatever software your broker provides will easily do this. There's not that many stocks that fit the bill so I doubt that these criterion will produce many newcomers daily, near term at least. The 5 year thing kicks out any ipo's. Which is good imo. I actually made a watchlist of the stocks I gave ya. I mean as these things go, while simple in its premise, so are stocks that fall into the "Dogs of the Dow" play every year or so. So there ya go. 1000's of stocks, 4 cut the mustard. Tons were close, the "down 10% in the last quarter" was the big cut-off. Change that to 5% and you'd have 2 dozen. g/l
I am looking for stocks for swing trading but mostly long term investing, hoping to get a better performance then sp500. If I open a new tread about finding stocks with upside potential would you be able to share some of your criteria for those kind of stocks? Any book recommendation? I am almost a complete beginner. Vanzandt: you said I could do it on fintech , did you mean finviz? I didn't find fintech screener thank you
I think it makes more sense to scan for stocks that beat the QQQ not SPY since most likely your multi baggers will come from some mega growth company from the NASDAQ. I think the last 15 months have got to be some sort of anomaly so I think your results will be tainted by that. As for swing trading it makes sense to buy stocks with a lot of short term momentum. The strategy I use is to look for stocks that break above some major resistance or even better break through their 52-week high. Wait for a down day and buy them -- actually I just go long via options for more leverage. The last trade I made was going long calls on NVDA after it went down $50+ on 6/21 to ~ $730.
