A good bit of advice, never check the time, don't allow thoughts of anxiety over feeling tired in the coming day enter your mind. Especially the breathing to lower heart rate. I've done this all my adult life.

I changed the bedside lights for smart bulbs and I have Alexa make the light red. I had an action called Red October mode but changed it for one that makes the bulb progressively more red and dim after 10.30.

The wife falls asleep easily but my phone or tablet screen sometimes bothers her however with the red lamp she is not troubled even though its more light.

Close eyes, don't move as you imitate a sleepy cat.
When your guard is down, the illusion of time fades away.

Simply don't sleep and don't try to sleep.
Don't watch videos on how to sleep.
    Don't take sleeping pills.

Go and do anything besides sleeping/resting.

Many hours later, you will naturally fall asleep.

Benzo-analogs; valerian or better yet, chamomile. Exercise two hours before bedtime.

  6. Many hours later? So, the next day?

    Yes.
    It works great for me.

Whenever I can't sleep, I'd watch my favorite youtube programs,
do some chores, or go running in the middle of the night.

  8. I imagine that might depend on the intensity of the exercise, no? As it is, I sometimes don't get as good a night's sleep on my workout days, even though I work out first thing in the morning. And years ago, when I worked out in the late afternoon and into the early evening, I would be wired at bedtime. Of course, eating big after the workout probably didn't help.

I've been an insomniac for about 15 years. It seems to go in cycles. It is so bad that most of my trades are done after 10:30am Pacific Time.

I could go on for hours about what works and what doesn't...Just two things I know for sure, the rest is speculation.

Reduce your caffeine...It takes about 6 hours for your kidneys to empty the caffeine out of your system. The older you get, the longer it takes. I (religiously) stop ALL caffeine before twelve noon. I won't get into the ins and outs, it's just a general principle.

The other thing is if you have been on benzodiazepines for awhile (Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin), you need to know about benzo withdrawal. It is real and can not only effect your sleep, but many other issues.

I spent 2 1/2 years (including two 12 step groups) weaning from 3mg Xanax, down to .7mg under doctors supervision. One of the hardest things I have ever done.

Just a sample of benzo withdrawal from Wikipedia. See a doctor if you deal with this. DO NOT STOP COLD TURKEY!!
