How High Will Johnny Manziel Go?

  1. I don't follow college football too closely. Of course, I was aware of Johnny Manziel, both the hype and the controversy. As the NFL draft finally nears, he is getting a lot of conversation. He's relatively small, but has a big arm and is very quick, plus he has the heart of a lion. Big risk high in the first round, but who wouldn't take seattle's Russell Wilson in the first round now if they could do it over? Isn't Manziel at least as good as Wilson?

Honestly, I had no idea, but after watching this video of his performance in the alabama game, I understand why they call him Johnny Football. Bama was number one and had a defense full of future high picks. For its part, A&M 's offense also featured lock first round picks Jake Matthews, tackle, and Mike Evans, WR.

You don't like this video, you don't like football. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ8xVIgWEBY

  2. My opinion - the lower he goes, the bigger the chip on his shoulder, the greater the drive to succeed, the greater the odds of leading the team to and winning the Super Bowl...

He just doesn't remind me of the other QBs drafted #1 who won the Super Bowl:

    Terry Bradshaw
    Joe Namath
    John Elway
    Steve Young
    Troy Aikman
    Peyton Manning
    Eli Manning

If you look at all the Super Bowl-winning QBs, the one thing you notice is that most of them personify the quiet, lead-by-example type. Nary an ego among.

The exceptions are Namath and McMahon... Both were loud and cocky, but ended up being 1-and-done types, with stars aligned perfectly for one season ...

  3. I don't know about that. I think all those guys had pretty big egos. You have to have a lot of self confidence to play the position. But how can you say Manziel doesn't lead by example? He was incredible in that Bama game. He has a history of playing big in the big games.

The extra time before the draft this year seems to have produced an orgy of second-guessing around the QB class. Teddy Bridgewater was the consensus number one until his disastrous pro day. He showed poor accuracy and average at best arm strength. Manziel's pro day by contrast was like a Super Bowl halftime show and he didn't disappoint. The big stage does not scare this kid. He seems to thrive on it.

I don't know if i would use my first round pick on him, but it will be fascinating to watch it play out.

    JamesL

    Todd Marinovich

  5. That's harsh. I suppose it's the kind of fear that would keep a GM up at night.

  6. Manziel shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence with Russell Wilson.

One is going to the HOF, the other is going down in history as another over hyped over rated draft bust.

Manziel likes to party too much and run too much. He won't last in the NFL.

  7. He seems to elicit extreme opinions. Jerry Jones is apparently desperate to get his hands on him. I wasn't impressed until I watched the Alabama game video. He seems to be more slightly built than Wilson, but Manziel is so quick it's hard for defenders to get a clean shot at him.

Russell Wilson never had a college game like Manziel produced. In fairness, Manziel could just chunk it downfield and count on his 6'5" Wr Mike Evans to go get it. I wouldn't be surprised if Dallas moves up to get him.

  8. 1) Russel Wilson stats his senior year after transferring to Wisconsin were ridiculous...better than Johnny manziel's heisman year.

Wilson- 72.8 cmp%, 3175 yards, 33 TD's, 4 INT's, QBR of 191, 394 rush yds, 7 TD's on 79 attempts , and led an undefeated Wisconsin team to the Rose Bowl (remember this was a run first, pass second Badgers squad and still his numbers were obscene with zero pro WR's)

    Manziel heisman- 68 cmp%, 3706 yards, 26 TD's, 9 INT's, QBR of 155, 1410 rush yds, 21 TD's, on 201 attempts.

Wilson is a run "when necessary" QB. He ALWAYS looks downfield when scrambling. Manziel looks to run after his first read is covered.

And most importantly, Wilson's football IQ is off the charts. Manziel is lucky if he can tie his own shoes.

2- Jerry Jones wants Manziel because he is a marketing bonanza in the state of Texas. Like Tebow on steroids. It's all about selling Jerseys and jacking up the ticket prices.

  9. Manziel can't tie his own shoes, good to know. You da man Clubber LOL .

  10. Spot on. He won't get significant rushing yards. He's small (boned) and short at 5'11"; he's not the prototypical 6'4" QB. Wilson is the same height, so it shows that height isn't everything, but they will smother the run.

Marinovich was a head-case but showed flashes of brilliance when in the pros.
