It was a nasty war with millions of civilians targeted by countries on both sides. Compared to Germany, Russia and Japan (lot of atrocities in China), the U.S. was pretty clean on that account (with some exceptions like Dresden) until the decision to drop the bombs. That's one reason war sucks, atrocities against helpless innocent people who happened to be born in the wrong place get tend to paid back against other innocent people on the other side. Give the world leaders credit for avoiding a nuclear conflagration since then.
All wars eventually get around to targeting innocent civilians in a effort to force the other side to capitulate. Nasty business, all around. America could put an end to ISIS and their ilk by nuking all of the ME. Of course, that would kill 10's of millions of innocents. Are we prepared to do that?
The whole point is to keep the big oil producers from having nukes so we can invade if they don't play ball with our energy policy. Sanctions are also useful to keep Iran from building its industry to the point where it consumes its own production and can't export. That could happen, because a big percentage of the population is under 30.
In a sense, we already ARE left with no option. The Muslims are already 25% of the world's population. They intend that the entire world be Muslim, one way or another. Either non-Muslims capitulate and convert to Islam or they will be killed. The only way to stop them is to kill them. BTW... there is no other religion on the planet going around with the message, "do what we say or we will kill you".
