Here’s one scary way being overweight can affect the brain in old age

    Yep, the lack of discipline practiced by people in the face of facts can be stunning.

    I have to wonder when I see these types of studies if they're not just reflecting exactly that. As in, people who are disciplined and driven do lots of things that keep their brain stimulated and that keeps their cortex from thinning. Another correlative but not causative impact of that discipline is they don't allow themselves to get fat. The only way to disambiguate that is to do a long term study where you force half the people to remain thin and let the controls get fat then test all their cortexes. Really hard experiment to do.
