This probably is a good thing for the Chinese. Once this professor is done with the jail time. He might move to China and a Chinese citizenship and do science. I read that he is a contender for Nobel Prize in chemistry, so I guess he is not financially well educated and wrongdoings never came cross his mind.
No I think he got more than just $750K LOL for his "efforts" in China. Thanks to inflation, a six-figure salary is nothing nowadays. It's a little hard to believe that he would cozy up to the chinese just for that. He is not just any professor; he is a professor at Harvard, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the world so he should be used to getting special attention and $$. He's been awarded $15 million in grants from the US National Institute of Health and the US Department of Defence. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59723343 And yet he was willing to provide everything that he knows to the chinese for just a $750K salary and a $1.5 million research lab? No something does not add up here. For him to do what he has done for so long since 2013, the chinese must've offered him something "extra" on the side. More will be revealed in due course, I am sure.
No if he were a Chinese citizen in China, we wouldn't have even heard of him; he would've disappeared off the surface of the earth and been locked up for the rest of his life if his life is spared at all for this crime of treason. He is very lucky that he's in the USA that he's only going to jail for a maximum of 5 years on tax fraud. Most likely he will be out in 3 or if his lawyer is really good and if he's willing to spill about China, he might not serve any time.
According to this: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/harv...ationals-charged-three-separate-china-related There were two other Chinese nationals who were charged at the same time as this Harvard professor but on separate charges. One of them, Yanqing Ye is a Lieutenant of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the armed forces of the People’s Republic of China and member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). And during her studies in the United States, she still completed assignments for the PLA. She had accessed U.S. military websites, researched U.S. military projects and compiled information for the PLA on two U.S. scientists with expertise in robotics and computer science. She even got interviewed by federal officers at the Boston Logan airport and yet she was able to leave. Now the b**** is back in China. This is the most preposterous of all. How was she was allowed to be in America in the first place when she not only is a CCP member but also a military officer in the PLA??!! And then when she was busted finally at the airport, she was allowed to leave and was able to land safely in China?? There must be a mole or moles in various US government agencies.
I’m sure he knew what he was doing. Foreign income is a biggie with the IRS. in 2013 they started cracking down on it hard.
