Fox News Poll: Biden widens lead over Trump; Republicans enthusiastic, but fear motivates Dems

Fear is a big factor when it comes to turnout, and that could help Biden. In 2016, more of those backing Trump (61 percent) than Hillary Clinton (54 percent) said fear motivated them.

“Negative emotions like fear, anxiety, and anger, can be powerful motivators for political participation,” says Daron Shaw, who conducts the Fox News Poll with Democrat Chris Anderson. “The lack of enthusiasm for Biden, however, does create an opening for Trump to define him as out of touch and not up to the task.”

In the head-to-head matchup, the poll finds Biden leads Trump by a 50-38 percent margin. That 12-point advantage is statistically significant, and up from Biden’s 8-point lead last month (48-40 percent).

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden continues to lead President Donald Trump in the race for the White House, as majorities say racism, unemployment, and coronavirus pose a major threat to the stability of the country, according to the latest Fox News Poll.

Biden supporters are far more likely to say fear that Trump might win is behind their vote choice (63 percent) than to say it is enthusiasm for Biden (31 percent). The opposite is true among those backing Trump, as almost twice as many of his supporters say enthusiasm is the motivation (62 percent) rather than fear Biden could win (33 percent)

Trump Says, ‘Fox Is Terrible!’ After Poll Shows Biden Surge

A day after Fox News’ latest national poll showed that presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden had opened up a 12-point edge over Trump, one of many such surveys in recent weeks that has Biden widening his lead, the president called the Fox poll fraudulent and claimed it was created by “haters.”

    KEY FACTS
“Fox News is out with another of their phony polls, done by the same group of haters that got it even more wrong in 2016. Watch what happens in November. Fox is terrible!” Trump tweeted Friday morning.

The poll Fox News released Thursday afternoon found that 50% of respondents would vote for Biden, compared to 38% for Trump (Biden led Trump 48 to 40 in the Fox News poll in mid-May).

The president’s handling of the protests in response to the death of George Floyd in police custody appears to have alienated a significant portion of the populace, according to a number of recent polls.

In the Fox survey, 61% disapproved of Trump’s handling of race relations, with only 32% percent approving (those numbers were at 56 and 37, respectively, in May).

A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday found Biden leading Trump by 8 points.

Per the Washington Post, Biden is ahead by at least 9 points in all recent major polls: CNN (14 points), CNBC (9 points), Reuters/Ipsos (13 points) and YouGov (10 points).

    Key Background:
A CNN poll released last Monday showed Biden leading by a staggering 14-point margin. Shortly after, Trump took to Twitter to announce that he had hired conservative pollster McLaughlin & Associates to analyze that poll (and others), which he said is “FAKE based on the incredible enthusiasm we are receiving.” Two days later, as part of an effort to refute a recent flurry of unfavorable polling, the Trump campaign sent a cease-and-desist letter to CNN, demanding they apologize and retract the poll, which CNN refused to do. Earlier this month, he criticized a Washington Post poll, which showed him down 10 points, as a “heavily biased Democrat Poll, just like 2016.”

    Critical Quote:
“CNN Polls are as Fake as their Reporting. Same numbers, and worse, against Crooked Hillary. The Dems would destroy America!” Trump tweeted on June 8, correctly pointing out that multiple polls showed that Hillary Clinton held a seemingly insurmountable lead in the run-up to the 2016 general election, which Trump won.

    Big Number:
137: The 2020 general election, held on November 3rd, is 137 days away.

Democrats lose if they pursue reparations or abolishing the police. Otherwise, this election, which is going to be a decisive repudiation of the GOP (like 2018), is theirs to lose.

  7. Actually, it shows Biden leading with men. According to the poll, Trump is behind in major categories of voters. Even accounting for poll result skew of 500 basis points favoring Biden, Biden seemingly has a comfortable lead in the poll. For now, anyway.

Hopefully Corona doen’t hit big, in play electoral states such as FL and TX and diminish Trump’s elderly voter base. I can imagine Trump otherwise gaining popularity with the elderly with riots going on and Democratic calls for abolishing the police. Especially with some protesters talking about going beyond the inner cities.

Happy to report that I got a call from Democrats Abroad today, and have the links and info I need to get my absentee ballot, and this time make sure it's not invalidated at the last minute ("oops, too late, too bad for you!") with an "accidental" address mistake.

I vote in Alaska, though, so a lost cause. :)
