Fox News agrees to pay $1 million fine for human rights law violation in New York City https://www.businessinsider.com/fox-news-1-million-fine-human-rights-law-violation-2021-6 The settlement was reached last week and is for its "pattern of violating the NYC Human Rights Law," according to the NYC Commission on Human Rights. It concerns allegations of a toxic work environment and sexual harassment at the cable network, the report said. Fox News has agreed to pay a $1 million fine to New York City for what the city's Commission on Human Rights dubbed "a pattern of violating the NYC Human Rights Law." The Daily Beast first reported the news Tuesday. The settlement, reached last week, concerns allegations of a toxic work environment and sexual harassment at the FOX Corp cable channel, the Daily Beast reported. "We are pleased to reach an amicable resolution of this legacy matter," a Fox News spokesperson said in a statement to Insider. "FOX News Media has already been in full compliance across the board, but cooperated with the New York City Commission on Human Rights to continue enacting extensive preventive measures against all forms of discrimination and harassment." "With this settlement, the Commission not only ordered the largest civil penalty in the Commission's history, but has mandated dramatic and critical policy changes at Fox News Network," said Carmelyn P. Malalis, the Chair and Commissioner of the NYC Commission on Human Rights, in a statement to Insider. "The Commission takes all allegations of sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination, and retaliation very seriously and our settlement today demonstrates that in New York City no one is above the law," she added. "Every New Yorker, whether in a newsroom or lunchroom, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect in their workplace." The commission first submitted its complaint against Fox News in 2018, according to a copy of the settlement obtained by Insider. It requires that Fox News revise its sexual harassment and discrimination policies, conduct annual sexual harassment prevention training, and maintain a hotline for staffers to anonymously report instances of sexual harassment and gender-based harassment. It requires the cable news network to remove mandatory arbitration clauses from contracts of its on-air talent and other staffers for a four-year period when they file claims with the city commission, according to the settlement. It will conduct quarterly reviews of Fox News for the next two years to "ensure compliance," according to the settlement. According to the Daily Beast report, the settlement is the largest in the history of the New York City Commission on Human Rights six-decade existence. The network was charged the maximum $250,000 penalty for four violations included in the settlement, according to the report.
This is not the 1st time we've seen you pivot an issue trying to showcase your "impartiality" when called out OP:
So do you have an opinion on a "human rights commission" fining FOX News a million dollars for violations. Especially since this a "human rights commission" which has largely been inactive for decades and this is the largest fine they ever extracted. Shouldn't workplace issues be handled by the proper government regulatory authorities such as Labor and EOCC. Doesn't this entire "human rights commission" fining FOX News stink of politics.
This is a state issue since the company and incidents I believe all happened in NYC. The federal Dept. of Labor does not sound like the right place for local government issue such as hostile workplace in NYC.
The state of New York also has a Department of Labor. Most local employment complaints go through state Departments of Labor and not the federal department. There are also state level departments that handle discrimination and hostile workplace complaints before escalating to the federal EOCC if necessary.
So if this went through the State department of labor you would be fine. It just bothers you the NYC Human Rights Commission addressed it...?
You have to question if the NYC Human Rights Commission is the proper government entity to address the matter and issue a fine. Can you name a single other employer that the NYC Human Rights Commission issued a fine against for toxic work environment and sexual harassment? (Hint: The NYC Human Rights Commission could not provide a single other example either). Their only previous employer fines involved situations where people were being human trafficked and worked in unpaid slavery within NYC limits -- typically involving the garment industry & illegal immigrants.
Was the finding of the NYC HR Commission improper then about FOX maintaining a hostile work environment?
Then the proper regulatory government department should take action and impose fines. Otherwise if a department that had never fined a employer for a hostile work environment imposes their biggest fine ever then it just comes off as politics.
Seeing that the large financial services firms located in New York City have had much worse problems with toxic work environment and sexual harassment over the past four decades than FOX did. Then why weren't these financial services firms fined by the NYC Human Rights Commission -- seeing they are both larger in size and revenue than FOX. In fact some of the sexual harassment and toxic workplace stories that have come out of these financial banking firms are legendary.
