    The sad part is that this is the guy in the FBI who was in charge of investing Russian oligarchs prior his retirement in 2018. I will note that the charges stem from work he did after his retirement.

  2. I just went back and finished reading that article.

    The second half of it is worse than the first. They actually have him indicted on nine counts in another case arising while he was working for the FBI.

    Some splainin' going to be required along the way.

    ==
    The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., unsealed a separate case Monday against McGonigal on charges he received $225,000 in cash from an individual with business interests in Europe who McGonigal knew was an employee of a foreign intelligence service.

    The nine-count indictment alleges between August 2017 and September 2018, leading up to his retirement from the FBI New York Field Office, McGonigal concealed from the bureau his relationship with this unidentified former foreign intelligence officer all while traveling abroad with the person and meeting foreign nationals. The person is described as an Albanian national who was employed by a Chinese energy conglomerate.

    The person later "served as an FBI source in a criminal investigation involving foreign political lobbying" over which McGonigal had a supervisory role.

    Sanctions can turn normal consulting work into a crime overnight.

    Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska who McGonigal was working for has been sanctioned since April 2018. Hence the hiding of all the payments. McGonigal knew what he was doing was illegal and the individual who was his employer was sanctioned. It's not like the sanctions on Deripaska were added in 2022 -- suddenly turning McGonigal's activities into a crime.

  5. Quite so, but the money laundering that he allegedly did as part of his receipt of payment does not bode well for any defense arguments that he was just doing "normal consulting" and got caught up in the sanctions process.

    The FBI alleges the money laundering. That for them to prove. Otherwise, the guy is entitled to a fair trial and can make his case.

    I can’t figure out right wingers. They claim the fbi is the deep state then highlight when the fbi catches one of their own for laundering money for the Russians. Got to keep the scam going I guess.

    This is good work on the part of the fbi. Now it’s time to squeeze him. He knows lots of things.

  8. Heh, a troll has showed up.

    There is a part of the FBI/DOJ that is a direct extension of the DNC and the dem apparatus. You will not see them "catching one of their own" amongst that group.

    Also, I am not as laudatory toward them on this as your are. Apparently he was dealing with foreign agents, including the Russians, starting when he was within the FBI and since. And throughout that entire period when the FBI saw a Russian behind every tree when they saw Trump republicans. Maybe if they had gotten their fingers out of their collective arses and focused on real conspiracies and Russia...Russia...Russia in their own house he would have been caught back then. We were told throughout that period that the FBI was above reproach and conservatives were just picking on the poor babies. He was probably tighter than a bull's arse at fly swatting time with Comey, Rosenstein, McCabe, etc. That right there was all the protection he needed.

    FAIL. The FBI is a political outfit now. A once legendary agency descended into the toilet after years of political games, favoritism, partisanship, and cronyism at the top. Quite a few of them should be in prison.
