¡±KUANTAN: Floods in Pahang worsen with more than 38,000 evacuees seeking shelter at 122 relief centres in seven districts today.

Kuantan is the worst hit with 30,307 victims from 1,561 families are placed at 85 evacuation centres.

In Rompin, the number has increased to 4,289 evacuees, followed by Pekan (3,037), Maran (637) and Jerantut (25).

Two districts were also affected today namely Lipis and Temerloh with 21 and seven flood victims.

State police flood operations centre spokesperson said one person died in Jerantut yesterday while another two were feared drowning in Sungai Isap here.

Mohamed Alif Khalid, 21, drowned about 4pm after he went out to catch fish at Sungai Kampung Sepial in Kuala Tembeling.

In Sungai Isap, a father and his 17-year-old son went missing after they fell from their fibreglass boat at 8.30pm.

Malaysian palm oil futures inched up today, snapping three straight days of losses on concerns that the worsening monsoon floods in key palm-growing areas would disrupt production of the tropical oil.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms that swept over parts of Malaysia in the last few days have caused flooding in low-lying areas in Johor and Pahang that are abundant with oil palm plantations.

Floods make harvesting and transportation of palm fruit to mills risky as roads become inundated and plantation workers are forced to evacuate.¡°
