One thing I've learned about myself over the years is that I have no desire to live in a condo or apartment again regardless of how expensive it is. I like my own space and the freedom of knowing that if I want to really crank up the volume of a movie or some music, my phone won't ring with a complaint from someone in the building.

There's something to be said for the privacy afforded by having your own home and a yard, especially if you have pets.

Sadly some of us don't have the luxury. We need to grind it out in a shoebox apartment

    It’s all personal preference.

if I were kidless, I’d be in a Miami oceanfront condo in 10 seconds. I know others who would rather have a 100 acres in VT

The biggest thing that I cannot stand with living in condo's is the complete lack of transparency and the complete control over your own finances. You are literally at the mercy of this condo board that you have very little say in choosing that dictate your life. The democratic process is a sham. The election system is non-existent. It's basically the same people that get elected every single year and they only add one or two new people onto the board and the new people basically do as the people who have been there for 10 years say. The people who are on the board for a long time, even if they are off the board, they still control everything in the background. Nothing gets done or rejected without their tacit approval.

And the financial statement is the biggest joke. First of all, it's not even audited when it's supposed to. They just have an accountant verify everything and that's it so you have no idea how much funds are left irl in the account. They can be stealing for all we know and we would have no idea. And they just voted in a by-law that forbids any unit owner from suing the condo board. And every time when they do a project, it's re-assessment reassessment reassessment for amounts way above and beyond the condo fee that makes it almost as big as the mortgage payment. And during the project, they never publish how much has been spent, how much has been collected and at the end of the project, you never know how much is left and where it went. Nobody bothers to ask and when somebody does ask the questions, they are just ignored and the questions are never answered. And since it's not audited so you basically take the board's words for it. Strangers you have never met in your life and have no idea about and you have to trust them with your finance and your life basically.

And there is no way out except to sell the condo and move out and needlessly to say, that's what I did. After three reassessments, I have had enough. Luckily I was able to buy a house in a place with no HOA which is really the equivalent of a condo board and now I am finally in control of my own life and finance. I am fine now but I am worried what's going to happen when I get old and/or be striken with a bad illness/disability that doesn't allow me to be able to take care of my house anymore. What then? I am gonna have to go back to live in a condo again and the nightmare is going to start again. :(:(

Hopefully by that time I would've made enough $$ that I wouldn't care as much.

Paywall here for me too but beautiful photo though as long as those huge floor-to-ceiling windows do not leak. LOL

Staying in a condo could be damn annoying when the neighbor upstairs

    - drop thousands of marbles
    - turn on high power sound system
    - party day and night
