Kevin Miller Nov 1, 2021 Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, has challenged a United Nations official’s claim that just a small percentage of his wealth could help solve world hunger. Mr Musk was responding to comments by David Beasley, director of the UN’s World Food Programme, who repeated a call last week following an earlier tweet this month asking billionaires such as Mr Musk to “step up now, on a one-time basis”. Mr Beasley specifically called for action from Mr Musk and Amazon.com co-founder Jeff Bezos, the two men atop the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Just $US6 billion ($8 billion) could keep 42 million people from dying, Mr Beasley said. If the World Food Programme “can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it”, Musk wrote in a Twitter post. “But it must be open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent.”
That's awesome. Now it's on Beasley to come up with a world class plan, otherwise he will have wasted a golden opportunity. It would exposed him as another talker who can bitch and moan about the wealthy but who don't have the vision like the wealthy to do something.
Love that he clapped back and set a challenge. About time the questions were pointed at those in charge of distributing the money rather than at those making it.
Experts at spending someone else's money. I am no billionaire but am happy to contribute to charities...but not without seeing audited financials.
I support the UN and its efforts but, like all administrations, over time they become bloated, inefficient and secretive to protect their keeps. It's the case there, in every branch of government and in business. Of course, it's worst when it's my taxpayer money greasing the inefficiencies, the worst of which is the military, by far our largest taxpayer's expense in the US. I know, some of you don't want to look there, but you can't point to bloat where it suits you and not where it doesn't. It's called hypocrisy or politicking. Musk is definitely not establishment and again showed he isn't afraid to speak truth to bs.
8 billion will not help to end world hunger. It will just make it worse. How stupid are people, really. There's a video for that, and it is not as funny as it should be in this context...
The ignorance around the world is breathtaking...there is world hunger not because of the lack of money but of a shortage of good farmers, plenty of fertile land available for farming....it's just that some people like watching others starve to death...the question is why does it anger some when the good eat? I get it, they own the fertile land and without it, the bad would have nothing...
