President Donald Trump has posted an AI-generated image of himself in papal regalia, just 11 days after Pope Francis’ death.

The image, posted on Truth Social, shows President Trump dressed in white wearing a papal hat, known as a mitre, with a large crucifix hanging around his neck.

It comes after the president joked that he’d like to be the pontiff when asked who he would like to succeed Pope Francis. He said to reporters on the White House lawn: “I’d like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice.”

Trump went on to say that he did not have a preference but that there was a cardinal in New York who was “very good,” likely referring to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York.

The conclave to select a new pontiff is now underway after the death of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 due to a stroke and heart failure.

The post has been met with bemusement and criticism, with many describing it as disrespectful.

“Please take this down,” pleaded one social media user. “Many Catholics, myself included, find this as a great disrespect to the past and future leader of our church.”

Another responded: “Trump, as someone outside the U.S., I find your post utterly disrespectful to the Catholic community worldwide. The papacy is a sacred institution for millions, and this mockery is an affront to their beliefs.”

“Completely disrespectful. The Catholic community is mourning and you post this?”

The president was criticised over his appearance at Pope Francis’ funeral last week, after he attended wearing a non-traditional blue suit and was seen chewing gum during the ceremony.

Some critics also suggested his meeting on the sidelines with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was inappropriate.

American Catholics are a very odd mixed bunch with arch conservatives who want everything in Latin, pre Vatican II, and guitar playing sing-a-long progressives.

As supremely shallow as Amercians are, they have their holies and Trump, now elevated as authority above the courts, is going for above the Pope. That he frames himself as divinely guided (or chosen) and appeals to the branch of American Christianity that blurs the line between faith and politics, it deeply unsettles those with a clearer sense of spiritual order and boundaries.

This may get him killed by tridentine mass types like Amy CB.

As of 2025, six of the nine U.S. Supreme Court justices are Roman Catholic or were raised Catholic:

    1. John Roberts – Catholic

    2. Clarence Thomas – Catholic

    3. Samuel Alito – Catholic

    4. Sonia Sotomayor – Catholic

    5. Brett Kavanaugh – Catholic

    6. Amy Coney Barrett – Catholic

    The remaining justices are:

Neil Gorsuch – Raised Catholic but now attends an Episcopal church

Ketanji Brown Jackson – Protestant (non-denominational)

    Elena Kagan – Jewish

  7. That's your takeaway?

  8. The catholic community deserves to be mocked and ridiculed without mercy. No sane person can believe in such a corrupt and perverted religion. It's not even about a belief on a spiritual being. It's about supporting a criminal organization guilty of the most heinous crimes against humanity. Let me be clear. Fuck the church. Fuck the popes living or dead. The entire lot should be taxed into bankruptcy.

  9. And how is Catholicism really different from any other religion, Christianity or otherwise, when you get right down to it?

  10. Now, to your question. If Trump is mocking the church, good. If he's disrespecting the church, good. We need more of that.
You know and I know the secular progressive left are quick to blast any religion when it serves their purpose. Now they care about someone, anyone wearing the wrong color suit to a funeral? Please.
