Of course its politically motivated. He sees Florida and sees how well it is doing despite all the warnings and doom sayings and is pissed off. I'd be as well. DeSantis is making many states look like idiots. COVID stats in Florida are better than many other states, yet he wants to ban travel to Florida. It won't work anyway, I find the whole situation hilarious. This is assuming the report is even true. Make up some BS about a new strain only in Florida (which, even if true would be ridiculous as it has already leapt to Florida by the time you put some sort of "restriction" in place, and then put your Stalin-esque travel lock in place preventing US citizens from their Constitutional right to travel state to state. Oh, and for kickers? Admit tens of thousands of migrants from the southern border because....you know, racism. Should be a good way to ensure Florida stays "red" for the foreseeable future. Critics Slam Biden Over Report He Is Considering Travel Restrictions Against Florida, Other States Critics slammed Democrat President Joe Biden on Wednesday over a report that his administration is considering implementing domestic travel restrictions on Florida, calling it politically motivated. While most of the reporting on the measures that the Biden administration is considering appeared to be primarily focused on Florida, they also mentioned California to a slightly lesser extent, undercutting the narrative that the move would be political in nature. “Outbreaks of the new variants — including a highly contagious one first identified in the United Kingdom, as well as others from South Africa and Brazil that scientists worry can evade existing vaccines — have lent urgency to a review of potential travel restrictions within the United States,” the Associated Press reported Wednesday. “The U.K. variant, known as B.1.1.7, has recently exploded in Florida, where over a third of all cases in the United States have been identified.” “While COVID-19 cases in Florida have declined in recent weeks, the U.K. variant has spread rapidly in the state during that time,” the report later added. “It now accounts for up to 15% of new cases in Florida, according to estimates from a team of researchers modeling the variant’s growth across the country — up from about 1% at the beginning of January.” The CDC says that the U.K. variant of the coronavirus “spreads more easily and quickly than other variants” and that experts in the U.K. think that it could be more deadly than other variants, but there needed to be additional studies to confirm whether that was true. For context, British officials have claimed that there are estimated to be up to 4,000 variants of the coronavirus around the world. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) slammed Biden over the idea of travel restrictions, calling it “reckless and economically harmful.” Rubio added, “Instituting a travel ban, or any restriction of movement between the states, would be an outrageous, authoritarian move that has no basis in law or science.” Since a lot of the reporting mentioned Florida specifically in reference to any potential domestic travel restrictions, critics pointed to the possibility that any such decisions could be politically motivated. The Miami Herald claimed, however, that the Biden administration had not targeted “a specific state” but were focused “on how to prevent the spread of variants that appear to be surging in a number of states, including Florida and California.” The Biden administration is reportedly considering restricting travel to Florida inside the United States. This is absolute madness: https://t.co/FVG1c3jpUa — Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) February 11, 2021 His Fraudulency Joe Biden is flooding us with countless, unscreened illegal aliens from Mexico but is ready to close Florida’s borders. pic.twitter.com/mt2s5Yw2jj — Let's Start Our Own MAGA CHAZ! (@NolteNC) February 11, 2021 In case you believed any of the phony Biden "unity" rhetoric, the proposed blocking of travel to Florida has zero to do with "science" and everything to do with punishing a governor whose success (compare to the current numbers of CA and NY) is embarrassing to the regime. — Tom Woods (@ThomasEWoods) February 10, 2021 "I'm not going to shutdown the country. I doubt the courts would, either. Trying to put an entire state under interdict would blow up the White House's entire COVID response. Red states would more or less go into open rebellion. But Biden's dumb enough to try it. https://t.co/g7P47yWpuB — Varad Mehta (@varadmehta) February 10, 2021 This is what unity looks like under Joe Biden… https://t.co/j0gLKCDUxP — ForAmerica (@ForAmerica) February 10, 2021 Punishing Florida for being open with lower disease burden than lockdown states. https://t.co/iKqJGAUANt — Phil Kerpen (@kerpen) February 10, 2021 The news comes after the CDC said on Wednesday that people either need to make sure that their masks fit tight on their face or else they should consider wearing two masks. “With cases, hospitalizations and deaths still very high, now is not the time to roll back mask requirements,” Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said. “The bottom line is this: Masks work, and they work when they have a good fit and are worn correctly.”
Please clarify - which stats are worse here than anywhere else? Also good to know that you support political attacks on a state - what amounts to financial sanctions essentially, and going against Constitutional rights of US citizens! At least that's on the record for future topics!
Seeing that many European countries have cut off travel from countries with high levels of new COVID variants -- cutting travel & closing borders in a pandemic makes sense as a public health strategy. Most European countries are the size of states in the U.S. --- the U.S. equivalent is cutting travel between states to reduce the spread of COVID. Florida is the state with the highest level of new strains of COVID which are more infectious. Cutting travel to/from states with high levels of new strains is simply common sense. It should be noted that several states in the U.S. eliminated travel from other states for periods of time in the U.S. to reduce the impact of the COVID pandemic -- take a look at the states in the Northeast. I see the Trump supporters has no problems when he cut travel from China or Europe -- but having someone else dare introduce domestic travel bans then they all get up in arms. This is especially amusing since if Trump introduced these type of domestic bans they would have been over the moon supporting it -- especially if it shut down blue states. The question becomes -- does this only apply to air travel in/out of Florida. Having the Feds shut the commercial airports is fairly simple and under their control. How about private plane air travel - how would this be shut down? Do the travel restrictions apply to the roads in/out of Florida to prevent people from driving over the border? How would this be enforced - with federal troops? You know certainly that DeSantis won't have his police enforce it. Despite previously setting up roadblocks on all the Florida highways into the state to stop cars from New York (and it should be noted that this "attack" on New York was widely supported by Trump supporters). What about "local" travel across the state line - the nurse who lives in Georgia and crosses the border to work in Florida every day? Yes -- there are a number of thorny practical enforcement & scope issues to be addressed even before you approach the constitutional issues on interstate travel. On top of this all the travel industry businesses are lobbying the Biden administration to not impose domestic travel bans. Keep in mind that travel, hospitality, and other related industries are major political donors.
They put restrictions in place to quarantine. They did not eliminate travel. If that is what Biden wants to do, then he should do so in the same way that NY did. Put a threshold in place and any state that hits it is locked down (even though I disagree with that as well). Picking on one state that statistically is better than most is blatant and obvious. Right, Trump trump trump again. I wasn't aware that China and Europe had citizens protected by the US Constitution. Practically speaking it is impossible to execute. Short of deploying the military at the Florida border (which would do a whole lot of bad things to Biden).
Florida is the WORST state statistically with the new COVID variants. Florida accounts for more than a third of all cases in the country of the B-117 variant, the highly infectious so-called UK strain. The levels are much higher in Florida than any other state in the U.S. Other nations are shutting down travel from areas (both externally and internally) with significant spread of new COVID variants. We should follow a similar policy aligned with best public health practices. These new variants are much more infectious. -- stopping their spread is critical to stopping a resurgence of COVID overwhelming our hospitals in the U.S. and causing many more deaths.
This is where contract tracing comes into play. Unfortunately, North America has poor contact tracing to help make good decisions about closing the borders or a state / province. Simply, if the increasing variants of Covid-19 have been from travelers from other states entering Florida... Make it a negative Covid-19 test in the recent 3 days of departure via Airplane travel from another state into Florida. Actually, I believe this is now a travel requirement for Departure from another country into the United States. The problem will be doing such for those "driving a vehicle" from another state into Florida. I don't think a shutdown like that would be possible...not enough resources. wrbtrader
right, so pick a variant (of the thousands out there) that florida has a lot of and say it's all about that variant. Never you mind that the variant is already out of florida and it just means you'll see the spike in this particular variant in other states shortly - especially if it is as contagious as the narrative claims. I wish I could say "shocking levels of stupidity" but it doesn't shock me anymore how gullible you people can be. Florida cases and deaths show no worse than the national average, despite supposedly containing 1/3rd of the total cases of this super deadly apocalyptical variant. Are current COVID tests testing for this variant? Is that how they know where the cases of this particular variant are?
Actual nearly all PCR tests sent to labs now in the U.S. test for the variant type -- this has been covered in the news.
Australia cut off travel between states, including in instances cutting off travel withing each state, they had zones within states. Many travel restrictions lifted now, but they apply them immediately if outbreaks occur. Currently in Western Australia Perth region, wearing masks outside is compulsory. (Only been 2 weeks now, mask wearing). Total death toll from covid in Western Australia is 9. Total cases recorded is 910 with recovery of 893.
