Indiana Lawmakers Crack Down on Bail Charities After Grisly Murders

Bill would block bail funds from paying bond for accused felons

Indiana lawmakers are working to crack down on bail charities after one such nonprofit sprung two defendants from jail who were subsequently charged with grisly murders. Republican legislators have crafted a bill to regulate bail funds after local press reported that a national nonprofit called The Bail Project bonded out two accused offenders subsequently charged with homicides in Indianapolis.

An Indiana state Senate committee on Tuesday heard testimony about the bill from Nikki Sterling, the mother of one of the people allegedly murdered by a Bail Project client. "In principle, aiding an individual who stole food to feed their family is admirable," Sterling told the committee on Tuesday. "However, The Bail Project is bailing out offenders with violent criminal histories. And sadly, it's the very communities they claim to be advocating for that are now in harm's way by having these dangerous individuals back out on the street.

Bail charities undermine the purpose of bail, which is to make sure the accused shows up in court to face charges. The accused is more likely not to skip bail when he or a loved one is the person posting the bail.

Grieving mom says social justice bail groups contributed to son’s death

Her grief turned to frustration and anger when she learned that the man accused of killing her son was released last year from jail on a $5,650 bond paid in part by a nonprofit dedicated to addressing social and racial inequity. He had been locked up on a felony drug charge and was facing three other felony charges in pending cases.

In the months since, Ms. Sterling has become a leading voice calling for more oversight and restrictions on groups such as The Bail Project, the California-based charity that helped free the man accused of shooting her son. She is set to tell her story Tuesday to lawmakers in Indiana.

The groups have emerged across the country in recent years as part of the backlash against tough-on-crime prosecutors and policies. Ms. Sterling, who now lives in Arizona, said the organizations are much too quick to go to bat for defendants accused of dangerous crimes.

“There’s no accountability to The Bail Project. … Once they’re released, and then there’s no oversight,” she told The Washington Times.

  5. A lot of bad people who are getting the out of jail for free card are causing harm on innocent people. This needs to be stopped.

BLM-Linked Bail Fund To Free Louisville Activist Who Shot at Jewish Democrat

A local bail fund linked to Black Lives Matter Louisville plans to post bond for Quintez Brown, the anti-police activist charged with the attempted murder of mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg.

On Monday, police charged Brown with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment after he allegedly entered Greenberg's campaign office, pulled a gun, and began shooting. A district judge set Brown's bond at $100,000, which the Louisville Community Bail Fund plans to post. The group was cofounded by Black Lives Matter Louisville organizer Chanelle Helm and has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars freeing heinous criminals arrested for murder, rape, domestic violence, and other violent crimes.

According to police, Greenberg, who is Jewish, appears to have been targeted in the shooting. The mayoral hopeful's positions on public safety and policing are at odds with Brown. Greenberg, a Democrat, has centered his campaign around a plan to root out violent crime—which he called the "city's biggest challenge"—by hiring more police officers. Brown, meanwhile, wrote columns for the Louisville Courier Journal that accused law enforcement and other "institutions in society" of "work[ing] together to maintain the status quo of the spectacular Black death."
