Considering Purchasing a Refurbished Workstation

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by ActiveTrader07, Mar 28, 2019.

  1. The following is one PC that I am considering. I was thinking I would add the same video (Quadro K600, purchased from Ebay) to support 3 monitors and 1080P HDTV. All monitors and TV are DVI outputs so I will need the appropriate adapters or cables.

Any advice on this PC or any comparable PC $600 - $650ish would be appreciated.

A VERY fast CPU. Pay the $70 more to upgrade from the Hard Drive to an SSD drive.
    IMHO a good deal.

  3. Good choice to go refurb. Look for intel xeon quad core 4th gen or better. Many on craigslist or ebay for around $150-300, even dual cpu for 8 core. Don't buy off brands, stick to solid industry workstations dell, hp or lenovo, they're lease returns from corp.

  5. Check Newegg for HP Z440. Best bet in your price range.

  6. NeweggBusiness has a
    HP Z440 Workstation
    E5-2667 v3 3.20GHz 8-Cores
    8GB DDR4
    NVIDIA Quadro K600
    128GB SSD
    1TB HDD Windows 10 Professional

    Price: $594

    Is this a decent price?

  7. Decent price? Yes. That CPU has a passmark score of ~16000, which is very good for the money. Assuming 8GB RAM is adequate (likely is), but if you want to be safe on the RAM, suggest looking for one with 16 GB. (Adding an additional 8GB of ECC RAM to an 8GB rig is NOT a "no-brainer".. individual 8GB ECC RAM sticks are hardly available anywhere. So if you think you might actually need 16GB RAM, buy a rig with it included.)

  8. Thanks for the tip about the RAM. I will buy one with 16GB RAM installed.

I have installed video cards before so I assume the additional video is easy to install? Any other advice before making a purhase?

  9. Odds are, the refurb computer will not have the video card of your choice. Not to worry if you end up "shelving" it.... they're generally not worth much $$ used.

  10. It comes with a Quadro K600 and I was going purchased an additional one from Ebay for about $20. Or any other suggestions?
