I had to move away from the expat area of the city which has all the nice restaurants because I was a magnet for proudly afraid types. For the few normal, well balanced Amercians you meet, way more are like this and want to be friends with a big man to make them feel safer. It was not good for my blood pressure being disgusted by their presence.
I understand completely. It's like almost half the country got brain worms à la RFK Jr. They seem to be growing in number here in parts of Canada, too. Another pandemic?
Its not like this didn't happen before, swooning for a dictator. Everybody was shocked in Germany and Austria too that their enlightened society went full 'Lord of the Flies". While I have bits of land all over now, there is one patch in Cali that I have had over 30 years and feel quite connected to.
