I love using fresh celery to make potato salad but have learned that it must be decontaminated to be safe. I break the celery apart on a separate preparation surface and soak the sticks in a dilute bleach solution before transferring the sticks to the clean preparation surface. You don't want to make your guests sick. I'm always afraid to eat in a restaurant because I can just imagine how the food is prepared. As for airport food...fahgettaboudit. :-(
You're terrifying me. Due to my desire for expediency all my chicken salad and potato salad is store bought...from costco. I foresee a bought of severe food poisoning in my future.

It wasn't so long ago we had a listeria on lettuce problem which made me stop buying lettuce. I now make my salads out of tomatoes which I can decontaminate. http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2014/...call-to-the-u-s-due-to-listeria/#.VmYY0qNdGig If you want to be safe only eat things that are cooked just before eating.

The CNBC gal yesterday was reporting that the issue looked more like norovirus than E Coli. Maybe a little less time worrying about GMO's and more time teaching employees to wash their hands.

Urban farming. My back yard is full of fruit trees. Vineyard with a few varieties of grapes. Have a raised garden. Chickens, fresh eggs. Of course I live in southern Arizona and can garden all year. --- When relatives with young kids come to visit, they are shocked that I eat things right of the tree, grapes off the vine, and from the garden without washing them (as long as they are not in the dirt). They have no concept that food doesn't grow with pesticides all over them in nature.
