Closing trades before Expiration

Is it always advisable to close all trades prior to expiration even if it's obvious that they're going to expire worthless? For example, I've been placing paper trades in SPY and QQQ (with 1DTEs). Even if it's obvious the next day that they're going to expire worthless (let's say the market is set to close in 2 hours) should I still close them? I don't use a commission-free platform. So, I'd have to pay commission fees to close those trades. In addition, if there is any value left in the trade I could end up leaving profits on the table.

    TIA for your input

    • Use a limit order to cover the commission.
    • This would also reduce the risk of auto-exercise if the options go ITM.
    • Auto-exercise then liquidation due to lack of funds is an additional risk - you want to avoid that.
