China’s Top Chipmaker SMIC Achieves Breakthrough " (Bloomberg) -- Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. has likely advanced its production technology by two generations, defying US sanctions intended to halt the rise of China’s largest chipmaker. ...ctd... " How will this affect TSMC, Intel, Samsung, GloFo, ...?
Over the last 2 years, the whole world invested very heavily in chip-making facilities. Soon the supply will be much greater than the demand. then you will see chip-making facilities collapsing. those chip-making facilities that are not cost competitive and outdated will die.
That indeed can be true. But then imagine which of the chip foundries will stop producing and which will continue working... I'm sure the Chinese will survive b/c they can't afford to give up, and can and will produce cheaper than the "western" ones, ie. TSMC, Samsung, Intel, ... Then whole World will come to the Chinese foundries b/c much cheaper and w/o geopolitics, unlike the US idis who can't compete but are forced to use such dirty tricks like sanctions...
If you look at the past few decades, those chip-making facilities that were not cost competitive & outdated died. That for example memory chip makers in the US. half a century ago, there were 5 to 10 companies (Texas Instruments etc etc). Now there is only one (Micron). So most likely, in a few more years, many non-Chinese companies will disappear from the face of the earth.
Putin wants to be Peter the Great. XJP wants something like Taiwan. It would have been settled if Mao had a strong navy in 1949. Taiwan was treated like a pawn in a geopolitic chess game when Nixon went to China in 1972. Of course, during that time the US used China as a counter weight against the USSR. 50 years later, China and Russia are together, the US is scrambling again. IF Taiwan were to walk over to China, it's game over for the US. How to conquer without spilling blood?
