https://www.extremetech.com/computing/former-tsmc-exec-us-cant-stop-chinese-chip-advances The surprise 7nm Huawei chip is just the beginning. By Ryan Whitwam October 30, 2023 The US government was caught off guard when Huawei announced a smartphone with a homegrown 7nm processor. After years of trade restrictions, it was believed China lacked the equipment to manufacture these advanced chips domestically. As regulators scramble to understand what this means for American semiconductor dominance, a former TSMC executive has suggested this approach is doomed. According to Burn J. Lin, China has what it needs to make even more advanced chips. The US and its allies have been going after Chinese technology firms for several years, citing concerns about how advanced components based on US technology could be utilized for military purposes. In 2020, the government stepped up its campaign, blocking leading chipmaker TSMC from working with China. This hurt the country's tech sector initially, but we're now seeing a rebound. Lin, who is well-known in the industry for his early work on immersion lithography, says that it's pointless to try and restrict China's access to Western semiconductor tech. In a rare interview at Taiwan's National Tsing Hua University, Lin said China already has what it needs to move beyond 7nm. Without even acquiring more powerful lithography machines, SMIC should be able to fabricate 5nm chips at scale, reports Bloomberg. China's SMIC produced the 7nm Kirin 9000S for the Huawei Mate 60 Pro using ASML's NXT:2000i, a deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography scanner intended for less dense designs. However, SMIC modified the machinery and changed its lithography patterning to improve fabrication precision. The US had previously blocked the sale of extreme ultraviolet lithography devices used at TSMC to produce the most capable semiconductors in the world. That ban has now expanded to DUV, but ASML has until the end of the year to fulfill existing orders. There was concern following the trade restrictions that China could follow through on its frequent threats to invade Taiwan, giving it control of TSMC. However, Lin claims the technology blockade has presented a huge opportunity to China's domestic chip industry. The CCP has adopted a "whole nation strategy" to boost semiconductor manufacturing, which could turn firms like SMIC and YMTC into chip-making juggernauts. They're already well on their way to fulfilling the country's need for advanced microprocessors. "What the US really should do is to focus on maintaining its chip design leadership instead of trying to limit China’s progress," says Lin. Currently, US regulators are arguing over whether the trade sanctions have failed. Some wish to ramp up efforts to contain China, but if Lin is to be believed, China will continue to advance domestic technology until it no longer needs Western equipment.
China is making significant progress after President Nixon's visit to China in 1972. Soon they will be the major exporter of AI machines. Soon they will be able to go to Mars and back.
Our foriegn policy is retarded. We penalize China who's economy (cheap goods) has demonstrated benefits here in America and in global markets. At the same time we'll send billions to other Nations who do absolutely nothing for us. Like Ukraine and Israel. Why do we keep supporting these countries, and why isn't any politicians trying to stop it? There are American cities that need desperate help, but we continue to send OUR money overseas? If there's no quid pro quo, than they don't deserve one freaking dime. F@ck all of them and put AMERICA FIRST!
I was told the chip is not made by SIMC but its own shop formed in 2021, probably same toolset. https://www.huaweicentral.com/huawei-set-up-a-precision-manufacturing-company-for-600-million-yuan/
It is not only Ukraine and Israel but, Ukraine has already gotten $115 billion and Joe Biden has asked for another $100 billion for a lost war that is guaranteed only to cost more Ukrainians lives and maybe, even the lives of US soldiers if NATO decides to enter Ukraine, to try and save it from defeat from Russia. Truth be told, numerous countries receive US aid in the hundreds of billions totally including, Pakistan, Egypt, etc. Not all of those countries are even friendly to the US. Pakistan hid Osama Bin Laden. Remember that? In addition, escalation of the Ukraine war with Russia guarantees that Russia develops closer ties to China, North Korea and Iran for starters, which would hasten the transfer of nuclear missile secrets to those countries by Russia. Russia is a much stronger enemy now than before the start of the Ukraine war, NATO supplying heavy weapons to Ukraine, has encouraged Russia to upgrade all its heavy weapons, tanks, helicopters, fighter jets, missiles, rockets, bombs including nuclear missiles. In addition, Russian factories making these weapons are operating 24/7 non-stop due to the Ukraine war. Russia is ready for war with NATO if it comes to that.
Where are the billions and billions of funding go? Certainly not Ukraine. The billions go to LMT, BA, NOC, RTX, GD for newer ones and the old ones go to Ukraine. For example, Ukraine gets the good old F16s. Why not give them F35? Pentagon needs the upgrade. Just like upgrading your PC to newer one.
Oh, Ukraine gets a good part of the hundreds of billions, a good chunk of it otherwise, there would not be enough monies to skim off and give back to US politicians. That is why both Democrats and Republicans are tripping over themselves to spend hundreds of billions on Ukraine. If US politicians were not getting some of the monies back into their pockets, they would not be bothering sending monies to Ukraine. Ukraine even before the war had the reputation of being the most corrupt country in Europe. Sure, the arms manufacturers are getting new orders but, a lot of heavy weapons are already excess stocks the US has in storage. So, this is being counted among the hundreds of billions but, the new monies, a good chunk of is going to Ukraine's pockets.
What benefits did China's economy (cheap goods) demonstrate here in America and the global markets besides taking away local jobs, driving cities into bankruptcies, imported inflation into our property markets making housing unaffordable for majority of Americans and now threatening even our sovereignty with the money that we gave them for the "cheap goods"? LOL China's leaped from a developing country to the world's second largest economy in the world all because of our trillion of dollars. Yes You are right. America First! Glad you said it. No more free money to China. We will make cheap goods ourselves or elsewhere.
Do you have prove of this allegation? What I can from news report, Ukraine gets used or aged stuffs. This link any good? I just google it. How Much Aid Has the U.S. Sent Ukraine? Here Are Six Charts. | Council on Foreign Relations (cfr.org)
