I really don't want to relay the story but I choked on some nuts (almonds, thanks) this morning and almost didn't make it to be Heimliched by Finn. So disaster averted but he literally saved my life. It was surreal for many reasons but I can tell you what it felt like to loss consciousness while choking. Literally myopic-vision and loss of hearing. Very strange.

Ironic as I had saved a choking victim at a restaurant in the S of France when I was at the conagency (with my parents who were staying in Aix).

So be mindful of what you're eating and masticate enough to generate pre-digestive action (saliva production).

The whole area is really sore so wife pushing to see if something is wrong. I know I am going to get trolled incessantly for this, but it may save a life. Don't eat like a Duck.

Glad to read your son was able to take care of you. I had to do it once on a kid at a pre swim meet party at another parents house. To be honest it freaked me out afterwards as the other kids thought he was kidding at first and were laughing before they yelled for an adult. The kid looked like he was fading out before a meatball came out. Parents took him to the ER, but he checked out ok. He swam one event the next day, and called it as he was having a hard time getting his breathing right. I think he was a bit scared of what happened and not ready to swim.

I can tell you that I had exhaled fully (out the nose) so I went tunnel vision maybe 40-seconds in to the event. Almost no time to act. If nobody had been home I'd be a corpse.

The guy I'd "saved" was so hungry waiting for lunch that he was eating handfuls of popcorn at the restaurant which precipitated his choking which was strange as I'd never imagine someone could block their airway with popcorn.

Ppl ask me if I am one of 8 siblings so apparently I eat too fast. Hungry Boi!

  5. I used to take a lot of vitamins/minerals/health food supplements. I thought I was cool because I could swallow all of them at once. As I took more and more, I had a goal of taking 100 at once. (Talk about fucking dumb). I made it up to around 92 if I remember correctly. That is when I almost choked to death. I'm lucky I survived that one. Now, I take them one at a time and usually chew them up even if they taste horrible. Lesson learned.

I also had my wife and best friend almost choke to death right in front of me because they hadn't chewed their steak properly. And this happened within the same week. Might of been the same chunk of cow. Barbecues can be deadly.

  6. Good that your son knew the Heimlich. Everyone should know some basic first aid. I too was able to help a guy out in a restaurant several years ago. Have never choked on food but have been choked out several times while taking close combat training when I was in Marine Corps many moons ago. We would partner up and choke either out. Fun times. Glad you're okay and good advice to chew your food.

Nothing like a brush with death to bring perspective and appreciate the moments we do have with loved ones.

Blessings on continued heath and vitality.

Funny that they don't call it the Heimlich any longer, so he schooled me on that after admonishing me. Have progeny or chew your food. Preferably both. Thanks.

It is a sign that you might want to look into trading Coffee futures on the CME/ICE. They are nut-sized beans.
