It was this: A piece of WW2 equipment running 10 Km of wire through mud to connect us with the civilized world by means of a manual operator. The technology was so expensive that there were only three institutions in the 1000 houses village that had access to it. 3 phones in the village that is. 1) The Post Office. 2) The Genossenschaft / Kolkhoz. 3) My father. Being able to call back / connect to the world trumped everything.
