And yet another sCiENcE™ narrative falls as the CDC lets us know what many of us knew all along, what the CDC itself knew for decades until COVID became political - that if you had a virus, you don't get that virus again. NPCs everywhere weeping and gnashing teeth. CDC Says Natural Immunity Outperformed Vaccines Against Delta Strain Natural immunity from prior infection granted stronger levels of protection against the Delta variant of COVID-19 than vaccination alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a study released Wednesday. Before Delta became dominant, individuals who had natural immunity were experiencing higher case rates than individuals who were only vaccinated, the study found, but after Delta took hold, those with natural immunity caught COVID-19 less frequently than those who were only vaccinated. The study examined four categories of people — unvaccinated and vaccinated who survived a previous COVID-19 infection, and unvaccinated and vaccinated who had never been infected — in California and New York between May and November 2021. The highest case rates were among those who had neither been vaccinated or previously infected. The most protection against infection and hospitalization was in those who had both been vaccinated and survived an earlier bout with the virus. The agency cautioned that the data in question only measured results against the Delta variant and that Omicron may present new challenges that alter the calculus of natural immunity versus vaccination. Biden administration officials and some public health experts have repeatedly downplayed the effectiveness of natural immunity against COVID-19, but this study is only the latest to indicate that recovery from prior infection can at least rival, if not surpass, that offered from vaccination alone. Most research has shown that for maximum protection against reinfection or severe illness, those who were previously infected should still get vaccinated. Many legacy media outlets covered the study by minimizing the finding that natural immunity outperformed vaccines and emphasizing that a combination of both provided the best protection. Headlines from the New York Times, Associated Press, CNN and others claimed that vaccination offers the “best” or “safest” protection according to the study. In a press call Wednesday, the CDC’s Dr. Benjamin Silk, an epidemiologist that co-authored the study, did not elaborate on the increased protection natural immunity provides and repeated the administration line that every American should get vaccinated.
That's not what the CDC actually said.... but you go with this fictional narrative. Here is what the CDC actually said.... to provide proper context.
No, that's what CNN said. You link to the same study the Daily Caller does, you're just giving us CNN's commentary.
I am providing the context of what the entire CDC information actually stated rather than narrowly focusing in on one paragraph of the CDC report which detailed results only during a short time period (as per the Daily Caller) rather than an overview of results in full context. Infection-derived protection was only greater in a period of a couple of months after the highly transmissible Delta variant became predominant, coinciding with early declining of vaccine-induced immunity in many persons. This simply underlines the importance of boosters. Let's read a few sentences from the actual CDC study (COVID-19 Cases and Hospitalizations by COVID-19 Vaccination Status and Previous COVID-19 Diagnosis — California and New York, May–November 2021). We will start with the one sentence the Daily Caller is honing in on. "These results demonstrate that vaccination protects against COVID-19 and related hospitalization, and that surviving a previous infection protects against a reinfection and related hospitalization. Importantly, infection-derived protection was higher after the Delta variant became predominant, a time when vaccine-induced immunity for many persons declined because of immune evasion and immunologic waning (2,5,6)." ========================== Let's see what the results of the study demonstrate. What are the implications for public health practice? Although the epidemiology of COVID-19 might change as new variants emerge, vaccination remains the safest strategy for averting future SARS-CoV-2 infections, hospitalizations, long-term sequelae, and death. Primary vaccination, additional doses, and booster doses are recommended for all eligible persons. Additional future recommendations for vaccine doses might be warranted as the virus and immunity levels change. ========================== Of course -- all the recent studies on Omicron indicate that prior natural infection with no vaccination provides nearly no protection whatsoever against Omicron. Only up-to-date vaccination provides any protection against infection against Omicron -- and admittedly the effectiveness of vaccination against Omicron infection is poor (only 30% or so) but the vaccination is still over 80% effective against severe Omicron cases.
So, vaccination protects against COVID and related hospitalization. Surviving a previous infection protected against reinfection and related hospitalization also. And after Delta became the strain, being previously infected was better because vaccine-induced immunity was waning. And this is different than what I originally said....how?
You failed to mention that this "relationship" was seen only in two states during an eight week period mid-year and was not found to hold true later in the study period. Of course, boosters starting in the U.S. in September eliminated the "waning immunity" issue to Delta among the most vulnerable. Omicron -- of course -- is an entirely new situation.
I didn't "fail" to mention anything. The CDC issued this report. If they didn't believe it was indicative of the truth, they wouldn't have issued it - right? Or are you saying we shouldn't trust the CDC? Which is it, NPC? As for Omicron, no one other than you mentioned that. I was specifically speaking to Delta, and that was the only thing mentioned in my thread title or OP. Once the data is out someday, I think we will find that vaccines didn't do the job here either. Sounds like you're just butt hurt as usual that you were AGAIN wrong.
This is a typical example of you (or a source that you use) only referencing a single paragraph to drive their anti-vax Covid-denier narrative rather than providing the information in full context. So tell us -- outside of a two month period do the results of the study show "Natural Immunity Outperformed Vaccines Against Delta Strain". Let me answer that for you.... No, it did not.
You can answer however makes your chapped ass feel better. But it doesn't change what the CDC reported. Natural immunity trumped (using that word to trigger you further, though it has nothing to do with the exPresident) vaccinated adults for Delta. End of story, really.
That has been my opinion as well.I got covid in the beginning and haven't gotten covid, the flu or even a cold since. Until December no one I personally knew or knew of got covid twice until my cousin and his wife got O around Christmas. For them it wasn't nearly as bad as Alpha and they didn't even lose their taste and smell like they did the first time.None of us are vaccinated.
