We wanted to share a quick overview of order flow trading for those who might be new to the concept. Order flow trading involves analyzing the actual buy and sell orders in the market to make more informed trading decisions. Instead of relying solely on candlestick charts and technical indicators, traders who use order flow focus on the real-time flow of orders to gauge market sentiment and potential price movements.

Here are a few key points about order flow trading:

    1. Raw market participant Data: Order flow trading utilizes live market transaction data to make decisions, which can offer more immediate insights compared to lagging indicators. By understanding the auction process traders make more informed decisions, reducing the reliance on lagging indicators and enhancing overall trading accuracy.

    2. Market Depth: By studying the order book, traders can see the depth of buy and sell orders, helping them understand where price levels might hold or break.

    3. Volume Analysis: Analyzing volume and order imbalances can help identify strong market moves and potential reversals.

    4. Footprint Charts: These charts display volume at each price level and can help in spotting trading opportunities based on actual market activity.

    5. Execution and Speed: Given the need for real-time analysis, order flow trading often requires a robust trading platform and quick execution capabilities.
If you’re considering diving into order flow trading, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with these concepts and tools. They can provide a deeper understanding of market dynamics and potentially improve your trading strategies.

  2. I totally agree with the volume analysis points 3 & 4.

Some patterns seen over the years:

Huge volume at the end of a trend with no progress in price usually means distribution - profits getting booked and the trend may be over.

A big hump in the volume profile chart (on the right of the screen) tends to show where price might get stuck if it approaches that direction again. Likewise the skinny parts of this graph show where price tends to run through quickly, like a cow going through a gate after thinking about it for a few minutes.
